Hi-Beams Not Working on ’73 Beetle - Help Please!

Sometimes when I switch the headlights to hi - beams, I get no headlights at all. Then a few seconds later, they come on.

Is this from lack of use of the hi-beams, or possibly due to dampness in the trunk area after a rain storm? Rain water could have dripped onto the headlight relay.

I hardly ever use the hi-beams, would you recommend that I get a new headlight relay?

If so, then where is a reliable place to get one? I was thinking of aircooled.net, oeveedub.com, or cip1.com . Thanks In advance!

Yes, likely the relay. You could pry the cover off and have a peek... Sneak preview here (Samba):

I,ve found the original relays are quite restorable. Just gently pry the aluminium can off the bakelite base. ie the part of the can thats folded over the base to hold it. Clean contacts . Assemble and rebend aluminiun back over base. I,m not being a 'tight arse", just like to use original bits. John

Thanks! I will try that. I bought a good used relay from a seller on eBay yesterday.
