Intelligence test

This is just a test.

I note that many of the RAMVA posters don't seem mind it when a job takes a few days or so. Either these fellows don't go anywhere for a few days, or their VW is a second car. I wonder if me using my VW as my primary car, which necessitates quick repairs, puts me in the minority, the "I need to get my head examined" category.

Quick survey: do you use your ACVW for as your primary car? If so, do you have daily commutes that can't be put off if (when?) the car gets all weird and doesn't want to go?

Up until a few months ago my bug was my ONLY transportation on an 84 mi round trip to/from work 5 days a week. There were some mornings when I would get up and, instead of leaving at 5 AM (to avoid insane traffic) I would be out with my trouble light filling the transmission oil, adjusting the brakes, adjusting the valve lash, or fixing some problem. (Couldn't do the stuff very well in the evenings... my wife considers it to be "another woman".) If it was REALLY acting up I would sometimes have to get up a little earlier...

Course, I've had to trace down an electrical problem in the parking lot at work too... in the rain... Fortunately I have a spare car until my daughter gets her permanent driver's license in a few months...

Yes. I actually get some version of "homesick" when I can't drive it. It's not a sports car with a zillion horsepower so I don't know why I like driving it so much, but boy do I enjoy it.

I don't think it's crazy to drive an ACVW as a daily, the biggest concern for me has been finding parts in a timely matter. I haven't located a single FLAPS that sells stuff that will fit in my car which means everything has to come in by mail order. Which means you need to learn to anticipate what to keep on hand. ;)

A well maintained ACVW will start up for you every time with no complaints, so it's generally not so much a question of whether it will leave you stranded, but how often you want to lose a weekend taking care of something ("lose" being open to interpretation, I also enjoy working on my car, would enjoy it more if I didn't have to do it outside in a parking lot).

I've owned nothing but beetles since I moved out of my parent's house, and I've never regretted it. Now that I live in a black hole of ACVW parts I do borrow the woman's car every so often but that's more because I'm an idiot mechanic than because my beetle is a poor choice.

Yes, and yes. But I have the monster as a spare or for those ocations and when I need to move a boat, a couple of M2 of sand, concrete or something like that.

Here is a quick rule of thumb...if you drive thirty to fifty year old cars then you better damn well have a "Plan B" because you are gonna' experience some down time.

... of the emergency broadcasting system. If this had been a real emergency ...

... eh? Oh, sorry. Go ahead.

The 63 is my one and only driver. I have a 20 mile commute over 2-lane blacktop roads. The house is at 7500' and work is at 6000' and this time of year I drive through whatever nasty weather happens to be passing through Colorado. Today it was nice, but Monday it was around 0ºf, snowing, blowing (gusts up to 40 mph) and very icy in spots. But that's what the studded snow tires are for.

I drive mine just about every day, although it's not my "Primary" transportation. Since I don't commute ("take home car") that isn't a factor. The wife drives my truck to work less than a mile one way. She uses the Bug sometimes, but I discourage it, since there really isn't time to get it properly warmed up on these cold mornings.

I drive the Bug for errands, out to dinner, etc. and an occasional (short) road trip.

Yes my 68 bug is my primary car for work, wife has a modern staion wagon though, couldn't quite talk her into a type 3 !, twice ive had to call the wife to come get me and take me to work. once a stripped spark plug blown out, LOUD at 3 am! and a long time ago a dropped valve :( This doesn't include various jump starts before i got my alternator. We also brought my first kid home in it! Acoupla years ago i had to tear down my engine to replace a crappy cam, the boss let me use his pickup, I don't have a garage, so ijust pput the engine in the kids radio flyer wagon and used that as my work bench

.................I have a Nissan 4x4 pickup that I use whenever I need to or especially in the winter months because the roads are heavily salted during those cold months here in NY. I have put 6K miles on my '77 bug since I bought it over a year ago and it has easily been the most reliable car that I've had during that period. This in comparison with a '96 accord, '93 altima, '91 vanagon and a '93 nissan truck. I've kept up with oil changes & brake and valve adjustments on my bug and I did switch out the swivel foot rocker arm adjusting screws for another brand of swivel foot screws because the ones that the PO had installed were difficult for me to adjust consistently. That's about it, so far.

Bussy's my daily driver. I have a spare car, my pickup, which is also fairly old and high mileage, so I have a #3 car, extremely high mileage, but it always works when I really need it. The pickup is running well enough now that I may just junk #3 cuz the insurance is awfully high to just park it in the driveway. I won't get into a situation where I only have one car. Even new ones fail and then you don't have a clue why!

Mine is no longer a daily driver. However I wouldn't be too ashamed to drive it anywhere almost and anytime,.......almost.

I have too many cars that will decrease much more in value than the beetles in the yard will, So I choose to drive the Camry with my wife (carpool ) to work, or my Astro van that cost so little to purchase that I'd have been a fool not to buy...........especially considering its general condition and usefullness in dealing with the other cars,..........you know, doing the parts chaser thing.

I have spent many many hours out helping get other people out of trouble with my VW than my VW has or ever will need from the other cars................PLaying "Rescue Ranger" has been a pretty big part of my history in the bug, as well as any other vehicle I've owned.

I agree with Mr. Willis though, An old car will need some help once in a while, so a "PLAN B " is damn nearly a must.

i don't use an ACVW for my "daily" transportation anymore, but i used to...to be honest the only reason I don't now is because i am a subcontractor and i need a truck or van...if i could find a decent double/singlecab or even better a decent bus that was within reason as far as price, i would drive a vw as my daily transportation....at the time when i did (for about ten years) i always had a backup vehicle....and yes it too was an ACVW...yep i was asking for it...LOL....two ACVW's as my primary vehicles...(the good ole days, actually).....and i never missed a day of work due to not having a ride....and really never *had* to use one as the backup because the other one didn't run...of course being able to switch out an engine in an hour is a plus..

It's winter here, all my aircooleds are sleeping. In hibernation from October to May.

In the summer then, I drive pretty much only my aircooleds, I have two street legal ones at the moment. Plus there are a few other cars to choose from.

Total of 9 cars now, just got rid of one a month ago :)

2-3 of them are parts donors.

Clayton (70 bug) is my daily driver. I like the fact that can fix most anything on the road. I have a 50 mile round trip, I can either take 20 miles of country road, and 40 miles of freeway, or 40 miles of country, and ten of city (Folsom, California... so it's not a real city). I usually take the country roads. I like that all the little kids wave at me as I go past, then they turn to slug their friends.

I also like that starters and generators cost less than US$500. Unlike the experiences some of my cow-orkers have had with new Japanese cars. And that I can fully understand all of the electrical and mechanical components. Brakes cost less than $30, for a complete brake job.

In the US, with the exception of big cities, trains are pretty much non-exsistant. When they do exist, the poor and vagarants, which are mostly criminals are given free tickets. So the trains can be pretty scary places outside of the "rush hour", which is 6-8am, and 4-6pm. My wife was on a train at 10am when somone was shot in the next car. In the US, gun crime is mostly a drug-war thing.

I must say I'm surprised with the large amount of ACVW daily drivers here, I though I was a poor weird guy and everybody else had their ACVW as secondary cars. Mine is also a daily driver, and I love working on it and being able to fix it when needed (always on the parking lot), but sometimes I just hate the complete world when I have to fix this or that and it rains like hell and I have to go asking for a ride. Fortunately in this country if you cannot get somewhere by bicicle, you get there by train, and I live 5 min. walking from my work, so if the car goes berserk no serious problem, it only sucks.

My 67 westy has only been down 4 days this year that's only because of owner neglect. Other then that it has cost me less then a dollar a day to own including the purchase price. I'm sure it has 10k miles on it in the last year. Its not the prettiest true suv out there but I bet if I put a years cost of any other suv ,I'll have the better vehicle. well I already junked 5 friends newer non VW vans this year, I know they had far more money then I have. So yea I believe as the heading states it is an intelligence test, I know I passed...LOL
