interior questions oval window 56

I have just a couple of questions (again) on interiors for a US spec 56 oval.

  1. armrest on passenger side only was an armrest (on driver side) ever offered as an option? I recall actually seeing at a show (can't recall where) with a 56 (or 57) having a drivers (LHS) side arm rest. ONly time I recall seeing one, and it was a stock style interior.
  2. was the pocket on the door only on the driver side was it an option? I've seen many photos of restored 1956-1957 ovals with pockets on both driver & passenger sides. But some without the passenger pocket. checked both the Garwood book & the Wilson book and neither mention either the driver arm rest or pocket being offered on the passenger side as either standard equipment or options (checked from 1952 to 1957 just to be sure). Thanks. - DB

Oops forgot that I'm talking about a sedan and I believe that sedans and cabrios do differ on the pocket, although not certain.

Now I'm not an expert by any means but I believe you could only get an oval with the one arm rest on the passenger side Although it wouldn't be hard to add one to hte drivers side. My 1954 Cabrio had the original interior in it when I got it and it had a pocket on both doors.

This is one of the questions you never will get a good amswer to/for, VW has up through times had so many different options and routines, there simply is no correct answer to your question. This partly due to their practise of using "old" parts on the assembly line till they run out, one example was my mothers -64 with semaphores!

My -56 came with drivers side pocket and passenger side arm rest.

Thanks. I kind of realize this may be the case, as both books mention VWs habits of using parts until they were exhausted. Just find it surprising that neither book mentioned the passenger side pocket which seems to be so prevalent on restorations. I don't get to see many unrestored ovals. I'm pretty confident about the armrest issue. Interesting that I believe both books mention that the sedan pocket was smaller than the cabrios pocket, but again never mention the anything about the passenger. I'll have to dig through old photos to see if I find any with a passenger pocket. Just hoping someone may have known something that wasn't available in either book. It may be moot anyway as I may not be able to get a passenger door with anything but a pocket (I'll have to check on that). Thanks again. - DB

Thanks. I've spent the last couple of days looking through various materials for unrestored ovals. I've come to the conclusion that the passenger pocket & driver side armrest were not available even as an option on oval window sedans. I've found photos of the passenger side and its 6 for 6 no pocket and I'm up to 10 (including some restos) for 10 no driver side armrest. I'm going to check to see if I can get a passenger door panel without the pocket as I think it looks pretty nice without it. DB

I have an un-restored '56 oval Bug (Deluxe Sedan) with the original interior intact. This Bug was imported to British Columbia Canada. Here is a series of photos... the 5th photo shows both door panels:

pocket on the passenger side, no arm rest on thedriver side. This is just one example; VW may havealtered the configuration during the production yearor for different markets. Rich VWBug.com
