Its been fun guys

Got the following message from AOL. Been on Ramva for 8 Years

Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005.

For members using AOL over a dial-up connection, you will no longer be able to access Newsgroups. If you have a separate high-speed connection, you can contact your broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups. Bill Berckman

Google is my backup. It just has a 4 hour delay or something. I've had it for a couple of years. No probs. Can access my NG from anywhere, and post too.

Just sign up with news.individual.net. I use that on my laptop so I can check RAMVA from my lectures :-)

take a couple of days to send out your username and password. Combine that with a newsreader like Free Agent..

You may wish to try isp.com as your provider, Mozilla/Firefox for your browser. Google will give you access to most Usenet newsgroups. Inexpensive and reliable.

They must have greased the cables or something, because I can see my post on it to Bill B. with a 10:48 time stamp, and yours (to which I'm replying now) stamped at 11:21. Pacific Standard Time, I guess.

Maybe they have. That was a good 1-2 years ago. They said they have a 4 hour delay. "Don't worry if you can't see your message on the newsgroup immediately, it will usually take up to 4 hours before Google archives are refreshed"

or something along those lines. Toooo long ago for me to remember exactly.

I agree completely on the Mozilla Firefox browser suggestion! Has been so much more stable than Internet Explorer and no secuirity issues to speak of. Andy

Another vote for Mozilla Firefox.

And against AOL.

teranews is another "free" service. They used to charge some sort of small fee to get started. It's my back up news service.

Time for the training wheels to come off. Get a real ISP, use Firefox as your browser, and Thunderbird as your e-mail/newsgroup software.

is where you get the latter two, check your local listings for a good ISP. In my neck of the woods I use adelphia, because along with my cable TV stuff, they also provide high-speed Internet access.

This is what I use; it works well and is free:

In the past month or so, gecko based browsers (mozilla, firefox) finally overtook IE browsers in visits to my website.. 43.61% gecko, 41.05% IE. Remaining percentage was various other browsers.

This on a site that gets ~7k hits per day, with ~8000 unique IP's visiting in a month.

Don't know if that's a fair sample of the internet but it was nice to see. ;)

Thanks for the tip about Google. Am posting from there now. Messageboard through AOL have been going downhill for the last month or so. Was only getting a couple of messages a day, and sometimes none.
