just bought a T25 - "G" gear?!

hi all, just bought a 1987 turbo diesel T25 camper. it's definitely not a syncho, but has a "G" gear that's a very low one indeed, and there are 2 pull switches on the dash that appear to refer to a (non-existing) locking front diff. can anyone suggest why this might be? could it be that the van's just had a synchro gear box fitted at some point?

cheers ric
