JUST GOT A 71 BUG!!! shifter help

ok like the topic said i got a 71 bug today, a work car while i restore and clean up my 67 squareback, well the car runs great, needs new fenders, has a small gas leak "fixed it already", one of the blinkers doesn't work at all, the bulb is good so i will check for heat tomarrow, well my major problem and question is the shifter knob "sorry i dont know the correct term" is very loose, it will move all over the place and when you go to shift to another gear it's actually hard to find the gear because getting out of the previous gear usually is more work then it should be having to pull way down almost past neutral before it'll kick out and into the next, and when i shift into 4th it makes a grinding sound like it caught a individual gear "the tooth or whatever" or two, i was told it may be the linkage...what do you guys gals think? seem to hit the nail on the head on everything else i'd really appriciate your help.. thanks again bobby

Could be worn coupler and or worn shift rod grommet. I would replace those first and see if that corrects the problem.

Yeah, what he said. They probably wore out 10 years ago anyway.
