Micrometers? (Is Bob Hoover around?)

I'm starting to assemble the tools that I will need to do an engine rebuild that will probably happen this fall. I'm wondering what I will need in the way of measuring devices, specifically micrometers. I'm speculating that a 3" micrometer will probably be a decent fit for measuring crank shafts (please correct me if I am wrong). What other sizes would be required to rebuild an ACVW engine?

In addition to getting some recommendation on which size mics I will need I'd also like to hear what brands people like. I've used a set of Mitutoyo calipers and there is no doubt that they are well made tools (and are priced accordingly). I definitely don't like to buy cheap tools, but on the other hand usually only buy the very top end brand when absolutely necessary. I tend to look for the best value, tools somewhere in the mid price range that have a good reputation and will do what needs to be done to accomplish the task at hand. I've got an Enco catalog in front of me and they seem to carry Starrett, Mitutoyo, Brown and Sharpe, Fowler, SPI, and their own Enco brand. Anyone out there who can speak with some authority on the quality of these brands?

Any advice that you guys (and Bob in particular) can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

My $$vote$$ goes $$ to $$Mitutoyo... :)

I also have a micrometer for 0-2" to measure cylinder and end play shims and whatnot.

On top of that I have a 4" plus telescopic bore gauges for cylinders (and pistons). Granted, these I bought only recently for a Chevy project
