My new 71 Type 2 Bus

It's cherry, it's wonderful. Sky-blue on the bottom and white on top. The local teenagers drool with envy. It's got either 87,000, 187,000 or

287,000 miles on the clock.

I had a bus like this in the 60's and now is my chance to re-live my hippie days. I've ordered a copy of the service manual. But I also would like to get some other information, maybe a copy of the glovebox owner's manual. Where to find one? Is the Bentley Publisher's 1973 one close enough?

And some Handy Hints on how to take good care of it, like

What rpm's to shift at? Where's redline? -- it has a tach. What parts always break and what to do about it? Does this thing have a blower? How do you turn it on? Where to get original-equipment-type parts like shifter knobs . . . so many questions.

I would really appreciate pointers to FAQs and other sources of information.

.................There's a wealth of information for type2's and other aircooled VWs right here at RAMVA. All you need to do is start reading & asking questions and also do RAMVA archive searches for specific topics at Google.

.............Another good resource for you would be

There are a few different mailing lists there including one that's specific for '68 and later buses. They also have an archive of technical articles I think.

.........Hope this helps.

EBay is a great source for stuff like owners manuals. Bentley for the service manual: '68 thru '79.

To make certain that the teens keep drooling, waste no time installing an alarm system and disabling system of some kind. Rest assured, if the Bus is attractive, it *will* attract someone.

Jim and Tim -- thanks for the pointer to type2.com!

One thing I'm striking out on, is finding the VIN. One of the FAQ's reads:

"8.) Where can I find my chassis ID (VIN) Number ?

Types 1: Found on a plate in the luggage compartment behind the spare tire. Also found stamped on the frame tunnel under the back seat. Type 2: Found to the right of the engine in the engine compartment. Type 3: Found on the tunnel under the rear seat. Type 4: Found on the left windshield pillar, and under the rear seat.

Starting in 1969, most VW's have a metal plate on the corner of the dashboard in front of the driver with the VIN number on it."

On my Type 2 1971 bus, there's nothing in the engine compartment, and all I can find on the dash is the chassis number (reads: 2212164342). Is there some other place to look?

Hiya Mike,

First off know this......2212164342 is your VIN. By US law the VIN has to be displayed so as to be readable when looking from the outside in at the windshield.

I agree with all the others who told you to get your browser over to Type2.com It is the single best source of information for 68 through 79 Busses.

Finally, your glovebox owner's manual will be available from Logan Grey at

503.292.7747. Call him during evening hours Pacific Standard time.

Thanks, Mike -- I was confused. The FAQ had these types of numbers catagorized under "Chassis Numbers of General Interest"
