My Passat seems to think the door isn't closed

Hi-

I have a 2000 Passat. It seems to think the driver's door isn't fully closed. The same beep you get when the seatbelt isn't fastened continues after all the doors are locked, and the interior lights stay on. There's no indication on the dash that there's a problem. I tried re-closing all the doors and the trunk, and finally turned off the rear interior lights manually. However, the light on the bottom of the driver door remains on. The beeping stops after I've been driving for a few minutes, but I've been out of the car for at least an hour now and the driver door light is still on. I can see it through the passenger side window.

Does anyone know what would cause this, and if there's anything I can do about it myself right now, like remove a fuse? There's nothing blocking the door, and nothing indicates it isn't fully closed except the light. I can't take it in for service immediately, but I'm concerned that the battery is being drained.

This just started this morning. Thanks much for any help you can offer.

Faulty door latch or wiring to it maybe?

You should be able to adjust the door switch. It's in the jamb at the front of the door (between the hingues). Back it out toward the door just a little & it should start working properly again. If it dosen't, it may be that the wire has come off the back of the switch. HTH, ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

Hi Paul-

I don't see anything that looks like a switch there. There's a large rubber sleeve between the hinges, but I don't see anything that looks moveable. Am I looking in the right place?

Thanks-

Hummmm..... I don't have a Passant in front of me so I could be mistaken about the location. Check at the back of the door jamb under the latch. It will be just a little button that pushes in, or a lever that swings (I think the levers are mostly on Hondas, though). ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

The electical switch that tells your comfort/convenience control module that the door is closed (i.e. turns off the annoying beep from the instrument cluster) is actually located inside the door latch. Unfortunately, these door latch assemblies fail often. The latch will need to be replaced which involves removed the door trim panel and the window regulator carrier assembly. It's not particularly hard on the Passats, but does require some technical skills.
