My Pretty Splitty ...

Everytime a repair problem comes up on my bus I start hearing from my boss "I pay you enough to buy a new **car** , this is just crazy." Then I get on the defensive and start telling of all the NEW **CARS** dead on the side of the road each day on my 70 mile round trip to work. I have finally stopped defending the bus .. I just give him a look that says "there is not a single car or truck or even TOTALLY RESTORED bus that I would trade for mine." and that is the truth.

I ended up taking spray cans and painting the bus purple. Looks like tie-dye .. not what I was actually going for but what the hell ... then started outlines of flowers and hearts and peace signs etc ... My grandkids have been kept amused for a few years coloring in the flowers and peace signs .. then I added some dragon flies and butterflies and made a few smiley faces from the peace signs that went bad .. I keep an assortment of different colored paint markers in a box on the front seat of the bus and when I show up at the grandkids house, they paint .. they are so proud of and I LOVE their work. My granddaughter has signed her masterpieces in a few places .. my grandson was a SLOW TALKER .. when he finally started to talk, after mommy and daddy his FIRST WORD WAS "BUS."

My dash is painted about a half dozen colors, different shapes etc .. and glued to the dash is a 1970's David Crosby look-alike head bobber .. he is wearing blue jeans and moccosins .. He bobs his head to the 70's music that plays on the stereo .. Mostly Zeppelin and Janis Joplin, but he doesn't care. IT IS GREAT MUSIC ..

Met someone at a 7-eleven one day who owned a paint and body shop near where I work. She offered to paint the bus .. a professional paint job, finish a few rusty places along the rain guard .. for $500 they will do the entire job .. ANY COLOR I LIKE .. So I said "ok." and then at the last minute I couldn't do it. She is BEAUTIFUL just the way she is .. My Pretty Splitty .. At least once I week when I am on my MISERABLE I-4 hour drive to work or home, I catch someone hanging out the window taking a picture. Every time I stop at a convience store or a red light I get smiles .. from people that otherwise wouldn't smile. I can see them flash back to a WONDERFUL TIME in history ..

RAMBLE RAMBLE ... my boss still tells me that I need airconditioning if I am going to continue to drive that "thing." OH YEAH .. then I can move at the lightning speed of about 40 MPH on the highway .. I planned on installing a dash fan like the one I had on my 71 bus but I don't know if David Crosby will be in the way .. If one of the two, David or the fan, has to go .. then I will forget the fan .. besides, I have the vent windows .. and if they weren't rusted shut .. they would do a GREAT JOB of cooling the bus in the summer. And they would keep the bus a few degrees warmer in the winter if the rubber wasn't rotten.

................I've got to remember to ask one of my brothers if he's seen your 'pretty splitty'. He and his wife live in Deltona. He drives more than one vehicle but one of them is an orange(?) seventies era bug........when he can keep it running..........lol. He also takes I-4 to Orlando where he's a firefighter at that big firehouse (station #1) that's in the downtown district. More than twenty years ago, he drove a splitty bus around Sanford for a while..........maybe it was yours! I've been to Deltona many times , over the years, but I still can't figure out that rat's maze of streets..........heh heh.

.........You ever go swimming with the manatees at Blue Springs during the winter months? I understand that it's no longer privately owned these days. I haven't been there in maybe thirty years.

If your brother lives here in Deltona, he has most likely seen my Pretty Splitty and I know I wave to several bugs in town .. tell your brother to say hi if he sees me at the store or coffee shop or ????

I am from Miami but moved away from there in 77 .. Orlando sucks, Deltona too .. but it is better than Miami when it comes to crime.

That all depends on who you ask... Like the guy across the street from me who had two front windows stolen from his house. The amazing thing was they looked like they had been professionally removed. The cops thought he was "remodeling".

BTW, my condolences on fighting all the I-4 traffic. My heart goes out to you. lol

K. "A hundred days to make me older since the last time that I saw your pretty face. A thousand lies to make me colder and I don't think I could look at this the same, but all the miles that seperate disappear now when I remember your face."

I got the same thing when I worked at Automatic Data Processing (ADP) and drove a 74 Beetle. I finally caved and bought a modern vehicle. I should have known that the ADP was not a good company to work for when the 21 year old college intern had the longest tenure in the sales department in that office. Bigger companies are not always better. Sometimes the big wheels turn small like they do at VWoA.

I had a '79 Bus which was fairly reliable 'til I sold it to a friend, basically a Harley guy, who just wasn't willing to take proper care of it and do the maintenence it needed to keep it going. He once drove it with the oil filler cap off, spilling gunk all over the engine bay. For three years it sat in his front yard -- by then it was nicknamed "Scarecrow" because that's all it was doing -- gathering dust and being used as a storage shed on wheels. He finally sold it to someone recently. Sad. I also had a '68 Beetle and a '59/65 Beetle ('59 body over '65 floorpan -- I found this fact out to my embarrassment when trying to resell it.)

They're all great vehicles but anyone interested in buying one needs to know that they need some TLC to keep going. If you just want to drive it and forget about it, might as well lease a new Civic or something like that. I don't recommend the new Beetles. My '98 Beetle had numerous problems: it went through *5* headlights due to a manufacturing defect by the light maker (I paid the labor); the rubber molding over the rear window fell away shortly after purchase (bad glue job); the electric hatch failed after about a year preventing the hatchback from closing; a couple of other things I forget now. It really soured me on the "new" VWs, and turned me off to the new convertible Beetle (I don't want to imagine the problems it could have with that retractable top, especially if it's electric.)

Not sure about those windows.....but I do think it's funny that a rear view mirror isn't a requirement on a car here !!!

....hell its hard enough to get most of the geriatric drivers in florida to look FORWARD....please don't suggest they do anything to distract what little attention they do have focused on whats happening when viewed through their substantial medication doses and tri-to-focal's =-)))

in virginia you can sheetmetal your rear window opening as long as you have side mirrors...so no inside "rearview" required... JT
