Need some help timing

I'm sorry for all the questions. I found my issue why my Bug died on me Friday. But in the earch for a cause I moved the timing. I adjusted the timing with a light yesterday, but the idle is really low. My adjusting screws do nothing when I move them. I have a 30 PICT 3 and my distributor has the dual vac hoses. I believe I need to remove one hose to time it, but which one. One hose connects to the left side of the carb and the other attaches to the rear of the carb (rear meaning rear of the car). I can't seem to find the right procedure for this set up.

If all else fails, can I adjust the timing simply by sound?

Thanks again.

2 vac hose distrib are timed with both hoses on at 5 degrees *AFTER* TDC. You must use a strobe light, no static timing.

Or...................time it by ear :-)

If you find the P/N stamped on the distrib, look up the specs here:

you can, but you may be greated with sounds of detonation and severe overheating on the next long grade you pull....most folks that try to time by ear don't realize how very far advanced they usually are....

Thank you both for your help. I hate to admit this, but I was timing to the wrong notch. My pulley has 3 notches and I timed it to TDC in error. Before I realized my mistake last night, I timed by ear and checked the timing. I was around 5 degree ATDC, but I retarded it a little thinking the single notch was the correct notch. So tonight I'll do the final adjustments and hopefully be ready for the VW Clubs event this weekend. Thanks again.
