Non-operative speaker

Your bug has a "right speaker"? Me, I just replaced my in-dash single mid-range 4" inch for my kickin' AM/FM/Cassette Radio. When I am roaring down the road at 65 miles an hour, I can barely make out the song. So I can't justify spending much more than a couple of bucks on my audio system. :-)

Ok, agreed this is a little off topic, but the speakers are in my 67 bug.

the right side speaker works only. The left one is dead.

I went behind the radio and did two tests on the wires: I got a small voltage reading across the two right side wires. I got a positive ohm reading across the two right side wires.

I got no voltage acreoss the two left side wires. I got no ohm reading across the two left side wires.

I then went back to the speakers and did an ohm test: I got a positive ohm reading across the two right side wires. I got no ohm reading across the two left side wires.

Left appears to be an open circuit.

Question: Is it the speaker or radio?

Are there better ways to determine the problem?

I am an electronics technician and I thought Imay be able to help.

The best way to troubleshoot is to swap the left and right speakers wires at the radio if possibl,e and see if the problem follows the speakers on one side.

The way you have reported the results of your troubleshooting gives me no conclusive answers.

Here are the possibilities:

1) Blown output on the one side of the radio. (This would account for no voltage on the output on one side. In this case, unless the radio is worth big bucks I would replace it.)

2) Bad wiring - First thing I would consider.

3) Bad speaker (Should measure around 4 to 16 ohms directly on the connectors on the speaker, if open the speaker is bad)

Hope this helps,

Bill
