Odometer hesitates

I have a 1973 std beetle. My odometer stops moving every .9 miles. The speed needle remains constant during this stoppage and never shows any sign of trouble. The pause lasts about .1 miles. It does not jerk, it simply pauses for a short while. I hear no noise from the speedometer cable. Has anyone a remedy for this action??

One of the odometer drive gears has cracked and is slipping on the shaft. Very common problem. If you're good with delicate things, you can pry the cover off and glue the gear on. Or...try to grab a working one at the knackers yard.

I fix these mostly on type 3s, but I can do beetle odos, too. It's a bit of work, however, so I charge $60 for the job. BTW, what you see now will just get worse, until the odometer has stopped working completely. Right now, it's just losing some small percentage of your miles, but this will change.

There is a guy "desertfox01" that sells rebuild odometers. I got one for my

69 vert, paid $40, had the fuel gauge in it. The only thing that I didn't like was that he painted the case (that you can't see anyway) silver. Front glass was all pretty, but most importantly, it works! If you want to see what he has, look up his name on Ebay.

The odometer counter is driven by a small plastic gear.

With time and temperature changes I suppose, my gear got cracked and was running loose on the counter shaft.

It is easy to drill a small hole through the gear and the shaft and to use it to tie both together with a piece of wire.
