Odometer reset?

OK I remember a web site that showed how someone rebuilt and reset their speedometer. Now I can't find it. Anybody know where it is?

I want to set a speedometer to 000000 miles on the baja I am building for when I put a new engine in. I also want it to read 000000 miles on the title when I get it. Being a self assembled bug I should be able to do that.

When the odometer rolls over to 000000 on a '71 does it realign the numbers? I seem to recall on the older cars they 'flipped up a red flag' when the odometer rolls over. Will this one do it if I put a drill on it to ru the miles up to that point? It already has 99978.0 miles on it.

When you try to register it, make sure you put down that the mileage does not accurately reflect what's on the car.

All states have an odometer fraud law. The odometer should reflect what's on the vehicle, not just the engine, according to statute. Although there may be exceptions for classic cars.

As long as you don't try to pass off the 00000 as actual mileage, you'll be OK.

I would think it would be easier/quicker to go forward since you are almost to 00000 instead of going ALL the way back....

Lauren....reverse for the *drill*...counter-clockwise...that is the direction the speedo cable turns while driving forward... J

Um... Drilling it in reverse makes the odometer go up in miles not down like you might be thinking. Drilling it forward makes no change to the odometer. Think of reverse on a drill as first gear on the car. Think of forward on the drill as being reverse on the car. Now which one rolls the odometer up? The odometer never rolls backwards. Drive your car in reverse for a mile and see what happens... The odometer will show no change in milage from when you started driving in reverse.

The drill in reverse should take it foward...

In Washington State, cars 10 years or older are "exempt" from an odometer statement. For the milage on the title they just put "Exempt", no matter what you give them for the milage. It is also clearly stated on the title that cars 10 years or older are exempt. This obviously does not apply to all states, and may only apply to Washington State.

In article ,

Have you actually tried this? This is not true for any of the VW speedometers that I've played with - they'll all happily count backwards. These were Ghia and Beetle speedometers ranging from '67 through to '71 - I don't know if things were different outside these years, but somehow I doubt it.

You're right. In fact I have spun VW odometers backward to zero (legit) using a drill motor (going Forward).

corrodes the vessel that carries it.

I think it's possible that some US odometers had one way clutches in them, but all the VW (VDO) odometers that I've played with lack this feature. All of them could be "backed up" as desired. It just takes a long time.

I think Speedy Jim was saying "just add the 22 miles on it and roll it over......................By running the drill in reverse",..........not the speedo.
