Oil Cooler

Question for you motor builders.

I've built a motor for a dune buggy, lots of chrome. When I bought the new fan shroud, the guy cautioned me about the oil cooler and I would either have to do some cutting inside the shroud or go with a different oil cooler setup. I let him talk me into an external cooler, which I kinda wanted to do anyway.

Question is this, do I have to use the spin on filter too? Is there any reason I can't just run the hoses to the cooler and use the stock vw screen as my filter? I mean, the screen is in there and I was planning on it being there too even with the filter. The reason I don't want to use the external filter is I really don't have a great place to put it and I don't really like the size. I know all the great reasons to use a spin on filter and I agree, but this is going to be a light duty, street only fun car. I doubt it will see more than 100 hours of use per year, maybe 3000 to 5000 miles a year. I'll more than likely spend more time cleaning and polishing it than running, (I like shinny chrome).

So, share your thoughts with me folks. I'd like to hear pros and cons. I put the engine in today and I'd have to pull it back out to run hoses to use the filter but I'll probably have to do that anyway, I'm sure I forgot something. I'll probably wish it was attached with velcro before this thing runs.

Thanks, < TC

As long as you change oil often, you can just use the cooler without the filter.

My shroud is the same as the one in your pics. After I got all this done, I realized I could have used to stock cooler but I'm not gonna change it now.

Thanks for the input. < TC

Glad to give input. Actually, I like filters myself. On the motor you saw I have a Mexican pump with a full flow filter attached. This was a vw factory design and works well. I might add a bypass filter system also as I have a chrome one that would look good in there I think. Dennis
