OT ? or not - diesel convertion.

Hello all.

I have just bought a 72 bay pickup (actually bought and got it home this time ! )

I am wondering how easy it is to put a type 25 (vanogon?) diesel engine in ? I am looking to get improved fuel economy / power / heat - but mainly increased mpg.

Cheers Rich

That is one of the none turbo charged Golf/Rabbit engines, installed with a slant, so special pan is needed. Except for that, you have all the auxiliaries to deal with... Radiator, plumbing, diesel tank, pump, heat exchanger with its plumbing and ducting etc etc...

It can be done, like men actualy walked on the moon, but it took a major effort... Sorry to rain on your parade, but think money would be better invested in the real thing.

............Also, the diesel vanagon was so underpowered that it was practically undriveable unless you just wanted to putt putt around town. One guy that had one told me that he had to go down to 2nd gear and about 30 mph on a portion of the Interstate here in this area every time he went home and the police started stopping him for impeding traffic flow after they realized what was going on every afternoon. He sold it to a tree hugger from Ithaca for almost what he paid for it though. All's well that ends well..........ha ha

The only conversions that I think are worth while and the $$ is to the jetta engine conversion. I was involved with 2, one was on a aircooled bus. It makes the bus great to drive with the increase power. and its still all VW.
