Petrol Fumes

Hi All, I regularly get petrol fumes inside my beetle ( 1973 1200cc) ...always when I fill about a 1/3 tank or over, and also going on and off round-abouts. I assume there must be a leak in the tank but I can't see any evidence. There is no smell of fumes from under the bonnet or the boot lids - only inside the car. Is it possible that there are problems with blocked breather vents or filler caps or should I just bite the bullet and remove the tank? BTW. the fumes are only present when driving, not when parked up or in stationary traffic.

The gas cap is leaking. OR, it was replaced with a type of gas cap that has a breather vent in it. Beetles DO NOT WANT a vented gas cap, they have a venting hose system that takes care of it.

If you had a gas cap with ventilation (or just LEAK), it would allow gasoline to leak out in hard turns, as the gas sloshes around in the tank and filler neck.

I got the smell of petrol whenever I turned left because my petrol cap was leaking. It only happened for me too when the tank was almost full.

I never noticed it going on roundabouts though, the only thing I get on roundabouts is that the petrol guage can go from half to full if I go round a big roudabout a couple of times :)

It might do that on roundabouts on the continent! Just BTDT.

Bay buses do it on roundabouts - there's a short hose joining the sections of pipe up in the left air-intake that sometimes leaks on right-hand corners.

Petrol Fumes, either love em or hate em.

I also had a leak from the cap, the petrol sploshes a bit when the tank is full. Swaped cap for an original one with more 'spring' in it, and all is fine.

You probably cant smell it when the bonnet is open because petrol is so volitile,, only smell it in a confined space. Try opening the window!
