I do. It may be a crappy dizzy, but it's a thousand times better than a reverse rotation toyota electronic dizzy.

I've got a few laying around the garage in working order, several that aren't, and one with a burnt out pertronix module in it. None in a VW motor though. I run an electronic unit out of a mitsubishi in my rail buggy. When I swapped it out I got better throttle response, a noticeable increase in power across the board, and it seems to get a little better mpg. Cold starts are a breeze, bump the key and its fired up, unlike the 009 which took quite a few cranks when cold.

I have one but I wouldn't call it cheap. The original distributor stripped the little screw threads for adjusting the points. That was about 200K miles ago.

I've got one. Had one in bugs for as long as I can remember and for the first time in my life, I'm considering getting rid of it. I'd really like to try a SVDA before I throw out the bread but I haven't found one in anybody's pile I can use yet. I guess I'll hope AC.net runs them on sale soon. (subtle hint John)

I use them too. Takes some effort to get them running the way I want but it works.

I have one somewhere, cheap Brazilian unit.. Perhaps Jan could give us the rundown on the tweak to get them working with an otherwise stock 1600 T1 ?

That way you could it keep it in the car as a fail safe in case electronics decides to take a nap..

I agree with Jan. I use them in all my vehicles and keep a spare with the points set as a spare.

They need to be tweaked to run with each engine they are put on, as is the case with most aftermarket parts. There are virtually no "bolt on" parts despite the ads. :)

Some problems they have:

- the curve varies. The max advance varies.

- the preload on the spring is often wrong. Too weak is commong, engine won't drop back down to idle speed for ages.

- the off-idle stumble: combination of wrong spring rate, preload, timing, accelerator jet operation and mixture. This is not the distributor's fault, it's the owner's fault or lack of knowledge on how to tune the damn thing.

Whatever you do, adjust valves first, make sure everything is in good working order.

Without going into detailed instructions, let's see what comes next.. hmm...:

- measure your total advance, how much does the distributor give you. could be 15, could be 25. makes a world of difference. It's adjustable.

- decide on how much max advance is safe to run on your engine. Usually between 28 and 32 degrees, more than 32 and you need to know what you are doing and shouldn't really need to read this. Set it at 30 max for example, using a strobe light and letting the engine run at around

3000rpm to make sure all advance is in. Then let it fall down to idle (900rpm). See where the advance is now. 7 to 10 is pretty much within acceptable range, depending on the engine. Again some may want to run as much as 15, but those are the special cases. If it "lands somewhere in there", it's fine. If it doesn't, you need to tweak the thing until it does, without moving your max advance out of bounds. (32 absolute max I'd say in this case). Adjusting the total amouont of advance is done by bending the weight travel stop tabs.

- then you need to experiment a little, on how FAST you get max advance. 1500rpm may be (is) too soon, 3000 is too late. See what your engine likes best. At this point you will start paying attention to the flat spot and mixture adjustment.

- always make sure that you get ZERO advance at idle. Does you no good there. Spring keeper tab is bent outwards to create more preload, this returns teh timing back to zero stronger, it won't linger. But it also moves your whole curve upwards in the rpm scale. Don't overdo it.

- usually you need to go up a size or two on idle jet(s) (in increments of 5, although "between" sizes exist too). Adjust idle mixture from the screw as normal.

Sounds easy huh? Sad part is, you'll spend a week experimenting different compbinations to get it right. Unless you are happy with just eliminating the stumble and making sure your max is no more than 32 degrees. "it works". ;)

I have two sitting in a wrecked VW bus.

The dizzy on my good bus actually has a vacuum advance. I don't remember what I paid for it, though.

The real question is "how many do each of us have..........????"

I haven't a real clue how many I have in boxes and on engines out in the garage............I know of at least five of them and I also recommend one under the bonnet for a back up.

I believe My next build-up will be using a toyota ignition system if I can afford it when I build.

I have one also, mater of fact my 56,64 and 67 all had one. I'm now restoring a 69 and finally put a pertronix in it. What a relief from those dang points and condensers. The were always leaving me places I didn't like. I could drive to Col. from here in Texas and have to change the condenser when I got there. Runs good with the pertronix also.

Which Toy system do you use? Do you swap lower ends or what?

Not trying to "put you off" , however, it would be a good search for google, and I believe I asked the last time for a full blown "how to" on this subject. VEEDUBBER is the author of the original posts about it. and the subject will be kinda like this one---------
