David - Alot (or all) depends on what you want.
Are you actually looking for a camper, and happened upon a VW? Do you (unlike any of us here;) have some deep-rooted love for the VW, and this find perhaps triggered it? Are you searching for hours of serene travel and camping with the family, oblivious to the mechanical underpinnings that computers and the technological advances of the late 20th century have given road vehicles? Are you willing to accept an expense, or looking for an investment?
Your presence in usenet reflects iconoclasm, intelligence, perseverance and more (forgive me if I'm wrong;)
As an investment, splits (pre-1968 are, at least at present, far more desirable (and far more expensive). Now, if you're looking for the VW 'experience', you may have found an excellent opportunity.
My personal opinion: go for it. Contact the owner (let's not be the guy who waits to gather the courage to talk to the girl at the dance until someone else has taken her home and...).
After owning, fixing and, possibly restoring, then camping... hindsight is always 20/20. If there is a wife and kids involved, I'd strongly recommend getting feedback. I'd recommend even more strongly listening to it. No car is worth losing a good relationship, as I, and certain (perhaps extinct) members of this group can attest.
Any aircooled VW will require _your_ attention, for two reasons:
1: There are few shops around capable of working on this vehicle. 2.: Compared to today's road vehicles, VWs, like Ferraris and beautiful women, are high maintenance.Sorry if I'm too personal.
Very best of luck to you, Chris

If I were to get this, it would become my fourth air-cooled VW, but my first bus.
After realizing it was the first gen bay window, I've decided to pass. I thought I was after a 72-78 with the pancake Type-IV engine at first.
Yes, I'm after a camper that I'll keep for a long time, though the call to a 4x4 vanagon synchro I'm realizing is a bit stronger for me.
