Possible thermostat issue ?

Hi all,

I've just received a replacement thermostat (new style - old style no longer available).

As I was modifying the thermostat bracket late last night for the new thermostat, I noticed that the new thermostat is drilled and tapped where it attached to the actuating rod (about 1/8"). The old thermostat has a male (about 1/4") stud protuding from the top where it threaded into an attachment point on the actuating rod.

I plan to install the new thermostat tomorrow and haven't yet crawled back under the bug to check the actuating rod.

My question: Is there a nipple or connector on the end of the actuating rod that is removeable and exposes a male threaded end to the rod (that will connect directly to the new thermostat)?, or Do I need to make up some kind of adapter to fit the new thermostat to the existing actuating rod? That would require repositioning the thermostat at least 1/2" an inch lower due to the additional length.

Thanks in advance,

Not sure what you have there, but the usual thermostat has a female tapped hole (female thread, ~1/8") in the top of a ~1" long cylinder sticking up from the top of the thermostat body. Some of those thermostats came with "adapters" screwed onto them to make them this way, so I'm guessing that you have one of those, and the "adapter" stuck to the rod when you unscrewed your old thermostat. That piece should just unscrew from the connecting rod, leaving you with the right attachment (male thread, ~1/8") for your new thermostat.

Thanks Jim,

You are exactly right. When I crawled under it yesterday, I found that the adapter was still on the rod. Luckily for me, it wasn't too difficult to remove with a pair of visegrips.

The new thermostat screwed directly to the ~1/8" rod and went in easily enough. I'm going to try to test it's action today though; once again, I had to brush snow off the beetle before starting her up this morning. Should be a good test of teh thermostat though; we'll see how long it takes to warm up the engine!

Thanks again.
