Re: New to group / About my bug

AS With all of my customers, I expect a Rolls Royce for my paltry 10 grand............A Brand New one too!

It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is. If you don't, it's its. Then too, it's hers. It isn't her's. It isn't our's either. It's ours, and likewise yours and theirs. -- Oxford University Press, Edpress News

Doesn't sound like he expected more, or less. More a curious question about what others ran into from various PO jobs.

Our '71 was almost totally original, bought for $800. By original, I mean that almost everything about the car was 30 years old - carpet, seats, headliner, wiring, ad nauseum, with the result that the car was very worn out all around. It was converted from an Autostick to four-speed by who knows whom, and without attempting to install a clutch tube in the tunnel. (I have a hydraulic unit in the garage waiting for installation). Still, the metal sunroof still cranks open and closed like new, even popping up correctly in the rear when fully closed. Amazing what parts of a car hold up on one car and wear out first on another.

A lot of my '69 was original, too, except for front seat upholstery, headliner and paint, but all were done well and professionally. OTOH, I paid $2500 for it. Haven't really run into any hack jobs on the '69, but a lack of essential maintenance in some areas. All the ball joint boots were blown and the joints dry. I just got done replacing all four trailing arms with new ball joints last week.

Also, an aftermarket A/C unit was installed on the '69 at some point in time (I would assume closer to 1969 than more recently). The worst part was that the condenser coils underneath the front of the car blocked two of the grease nipples for the front beam. Who knows how long it had been since anyone greased the beam. Oh, and also, the synchro in 1st gear appears to be shot. You have to come to a complete stop to put it in 1st without grinding.

Hey welcome! No I don't beleieve it is normal for a 1600 DP to have a

31 pict carb on it. Should be a 34 pict. Wiring sounds pretty bad. My bug, a 73 std with 1600 dp is slowly being restored. I am almost done with the chasis, just need to put on sway bars, bigger wheels, and might need to replace the ball joints. The boots aren't torn, but they're probably toast anyway. So far I've replaced all 4 shocks with new bolts and hardware, replaced the steering box, replaced all four tie rod ends, replaced the front brakes with discs and new lines, replaced all soft fuel hose, and clamped all connections (make sure you do this, I had a leak last week that was a PITA) and a few other smaller things.

Good luck with yours, and my first suggestion is to get all that wiring straightned out. Hope you have a good voltmeter and access to wiring diagrams. Have the Bentley Manual? Muir Book? If not, get 'em.

Just got replacement parts in last night. Intake, carb, lifters.

I'll be putting those parts on this Saturday if all goes well, and then I gotta save up to buy some ignition parts so I can finish the repairs/upgrades. Hopefully I'll be hittin' the trails again within the next few weeks...or days... If I can convince my wife that I should go ahead and buy new parts instead of searching for old used stuff for the ignition then this will happen even faster... I have my eye on a SWEET distributor/coil combo...

Looking forward to it. Haven't been offroad lately, myself. I just recently sold the F-150 off, so I could continue to buy gas for my "fun" rig.

4x2 sucks occasionally, but it encourages you to drive a little smarter (and look for more solid footing :-)

OK, back on topic...

I like to go off roading in my little 4x4 pickup. You know, nothing special. Just a little Ford F350 1ton 4door 4x4, lifted with 33 inch tires on it. Just a little truck donchaknow.....*8-}

Jeeze, it looks like a parade.

Statistic: If you took all the cars in New York, and put them bumper-to-bumper they would reach to California ... and some jerk from Jersey would try to pass.

I did not see any offroad pictures in there. Are they hidden=20 somewhere?

Yeah, but that's ok. I'd pull you out when you got stuck. :-)
