Rear axle assembly-67 VW transaxle

Maybe someone here can help me with this---have assembled my rear axles following the Bentley manual diagram. The assembly order they illustrate is inside spacer, rear wheel bearing, flat washer, small o- ring, outer(larger) spacer, then bolt on the outer housing with the oil seal and oil slinger washer. I seem to remember making a note of how it was put together before and I thought the small o-ring was inside of the inner spacer-everything else the same. Both rear axles are slowly leaking ,so somethings not right-anyone have the info? Thanks , Fred67bug

The small o-ring order is correct: bearing, flat washer, small, o-ring, spacer (with grooved side towards o-ring, so the o- ring seats in it). Clear rust and sludge deposits from the spacer and sand it smooth, as it will not seal against the oil seal, and it can wear it real fast.

Then you put the paper gasket, the larger o-ring and the bearing cover.

You must oil the o-rings before installation otherwise they will be damaged while pressed when you tighten things up. Same for the bearing cover oil seal.

If you did all the above correctly, then the problem is with defective o-rings, that usually (most of the times) come with the new kits. What I do is to reinstall new kits (just the o-rings), until the bearing cover finally seals properly.

Also check that the outer spacer fits properly on the bearing cover oil seal. If you replaced the oil seal, you must NOT drive it all the way in the bearing cover.
