I've been trying to find a drivers side rear window defrost vent for my '71 beetle for quite some time now, anyone have one like this lying around? This is the second time I've posted an ad on thesamba.com, no luck yet.

I tried posting for the same 'want' a couple of times, also. They are in very scarce supply, and if you find one it will probably be in a junkyard or an otherwise clean part out. I received an e-mail from SoCal that they are no longer made.

Can you use a later model set of 6 piece ones????? I am going to need to address this issue eventually also.
Anyone know if the 72 and up ones will work on these 71's?

Damn!..........I was hoping someone would say they figured out how to make 'em work,...............Oh Well,................I know a part that will bring extra monay soon. '71 is the single highest production year for the US..............now how come they don't make more parts for these things.

My car is a 1971, and it had a 6 piece set as original equipment when I bought it in 1991. Maybe VW changed over to another design later in the year.
The 6 piece set that west coast metric sells was listed as 72 up when I ordered it. I bought a set and it fits my car perfectly. Maybe the cut-outs in the body differ from early to late production.
If the piece in the samba ad is made of the same kind of cheap plastic that the 6 piece set my car had, you will be lucky to find a good replacement. The sun/uvrays/heat take their toll after 20-30 years. My originals were literally falling to bits, and really discolored/yellowed, hence buying the replacements.

I'm considering just covering the holes with headliner material. Does anyone sell just the material, or partial kits? I only need to do the part around the back window, I'd hate to have to buy the whole headliner to cover these
2 small spots.If you don't, it's its.

My car is a Super Beetle. As has been stated here many times, the STDs and SBs are the same car from the windshield to the rear.
When I ordered them over the phone, the rep said they are for 72 up, your car is a 71, etc. I explained that I had looked at original 72 up cars in the junkyard, the vents looked identical to my 71's, and they should work.
Looking back, I remember seeing those ugly, discolored, decaying vents in the rear view mirror on a daily basis, and they really bothered me. Replacing them with fresh new parts removed a major eyesore (for me) from the interior.
