Removing Transmission Rear Oil Seal

Behind the throwout bearing. Bentley says that it is not necessary to remove the rear of the transmission to replace the rear oil seal, though their photograph shows a hooklike tool being inserted into the hole where the input shaft goes.

I am trying to replace my oil seal, yet with the input shaft poking out and getting in the way and generally being a nuisance, I can't pry that darn seal out. Is there a secret technique?

The tool used in the Bentley is some kind of hook-like lever. I had also trouble with mine. In my opinion, whatever you do, you'll eventually break the old seal, It wont come out solid.=20 Whatever you do, don't scratch the surface that the seal meets in the transmission.

I used finally the following procedure:=20

Pull as much of it as you can with the nose pliers. Try to get the metal inside the seal to bend inwards. After that you can carefully bend it more inside with a screwdriver and the seal will collapse inwards. Now pull it out with pliers. Not nice, but I got mine out=20 of there.

To drive in the new one, be careful when sliding it over the clutch shaft bores. Slightly apply sealant to the outer surface=20 of the seal. I used a piece of rigid plastic water pipe (from normal=20 hardware store) that goes over the shaft and fits on the seal to=20 drive it in with a rubber hammer.

Even with the tranny's input shaft in the way? What do you grab?

Blood, sweat, tears, cussing, and out-of-control violence.

Or a seal puller.

Or use whatever sharp tool that you can get your hands on to poke a hole through teh face of the seal, through the metal that's beneath the rubber top layer. Then pry it out

Dang that thing was a b***h to pull out. Thanks for the help, guys. Tried to find a seal puller, even went to Seal Beach, but no luck. Game wardens just gave me a funny look.

Hey Mike Rocket - when 'you' are all done rebuilding your engine, there's gonna be a part for the rest of the crew. Right?

the seal's lip. it broke, but the gap was big enough to grab a bigger part of it and still not scratch the input shaft... once a lot was broken i could tap it a bit, twist it and grab it by the edge...

I'll put an engraved plaque in the engine compartment with everyone's name on it. Or, did you mean can the rest of the crew have left over parts?
