Reverse gear problem im my 1302

I just bought a 1302. It has a problem with the reverse gear. When i try to reverse the car, the car reverses a bit then the reverse gear grinds with noise/jumps out/don't works..... Even when i try to push/hold the gearstick firm in the reverve position. Is this a sign of a bad sprocket in the gearbox or should i look for worn bushings in the gearshifting system. Greetings from Denmark.... MIC

While it is remotely possible that the shift linkage is worn or out of adjustment, the most common cause of this problem is indeed "worn sprockets".

Reverse gear teeth are "straight cut". Each time Reverse is selected while the gears are still turning a bit, the teeth wear down at the edges. After 30 years of this, there is not enough tooth material left to provide a good mesh. Then, under load, the forces on the teeth cause them to "cam out" of engagement.

Sometimes, the adjustment of the gear mesh inside the box can be at fault, where the gears do not mesh center-to-center.

In either event, repair requires very complete disassembly of the box. To get some idea, look at this procedure:

If you want to verify that the shifter linkage is correctly selecting Reverse, lift the access plate under the rear seat. Select Reverse gear, then manually attempt to pull the transmission selector shaft further outward. If it can not be moved, the linkage has done its job.
