Self-Disassembling Fuel Pumps ??

Managed to get stranded by the side of I-5 this morning... a new way.

In 40ish years of wrenching on various cars, I've seen maybe a half dozen actually dead (mechanical) fuel pumps: one a cracked case, the rest blown diaphrams... but "discovered" a new failure mode this a.m.... the fulcrum pin walking its way out to the rear, leaving the cam follower still doing its job... but unable to transmit its energy to the diaphram, ie, non-working fuel pump, ie, empty float bowl, ie, no go. Was able to deduce that it was fuel problem and having a spare

  • tools with me: pulled the pump, ready to replace it, only to notice the pin pointing toward the inlet the I didn't remember ever seeing there before... and then noticing the hole in the front... (slowlly) put 2 and 2 together: decided to line up the parts inside, tapthe pin back in, peen the ends over a lightly and to see if that wasn't the problem. It cranked until the bowl was full and came to full song... My question is: have others seen the fulcrum / pivot pin backing out and causing a failure? Is this a common failure mode? Am I just lucky in not having not seen it until now? Thought I might ask.

I once saw this, I stopped to help a VW owner on the side of the road with this exact problem. I couldn't get the pin w/o tools but we did have a phillips screw driver that happened to have the same dia. shank,. and the pointy-ness of the shaft help align the fulcrum and off she went. BTW.... stop and help ACVW people stranded on the side of the road. keep a spare fan belt and a fire extinguisher.

i keep spare cables(cluth, throttle) and many other items.....have used more "spare parts" on other folks vw's that are stranded than my own..... i keep a later model (72-74) clutch cable on board for this reason....they are longer and somewhat "universal".....on an earlier car you have to adjust the nut all the way down the threads but it can get the folks going..... the earlier cable is a tad too short for the later models....just some useless info...

maybe....but i am a rarity(SURPRISE....LOL) in that i carry one that is more "universal" to help others...hehe...so only really useful to someone in a crisis.....whether a reader here, or to someone that they may choose to help...if the info helps, then cool....
