Managed to get stranded by the side of I-5 this morning... a new way.
In 40ish years of wrenching on various cars, I've seen maybe a half dozen actually dead (mechanical) fuel pumps: one a cracked case, the rest blown diaphrams... but "discovered" a new failure mode this a.m.... the fulcrum pin walking its way out to the rear, leaving the cam follower still doing its job... but unable to transmit its energy to the diaphram, ie, non-working fuel pump, ie, empty float bowl, ie, no go. Was able to deduce that it was fuel problem and having a spare
- tools with me: pulled the pump, ready to replace it, only to notice the pin pointing toward the inlet the I didn't remember ever seeing there before... and then noticing the hole in the front... (slowlly) put 2 and 2 together: decided to line up the parts inside, tapthe pin back in, peen the ends over a lightly and to see if that wasn't the problem. It cranked until the bowl was full and came to full song... My question is: have others seen the fulcrum / pivot pin backing out and causing a failure? Is this a common failure mode? Am I just lucky in not having not seen it until now? Thought I might ask.
