Setting up dellorto 40's

All, Right now i have the engine running - thanks all those that helped. I'm running the standard fuel pump and a 009 distribitor, engine 1776cc ,engle 110cam. Question. i followed the pre tune for carbs engine idles (all be it high). I have 2 problems i get all can explain as a very throaty "bap bap bap " noise coming out of the tops of the carbs Also soon as i try to drive the car down the road (bap bap bap noise still there ) i put my foot on the gas and the bogs but if i gently accel i vaguely pull away. I've been assured the carbs are jetted ok (hmmmmm).

Do i have fuel starvation (i do have a inline filter before the pump ) ? blocked main jet (even though there new) ? Timing ? (what should a 1776cc be set at TDC or 7.5deg BTDC or 5deg ATDC, something else)

Has any body else had this problem ?

Any Ideas ?

John

Glad to hear you've got it running. Judging from the awful crackles, pops and bangs most any non-stock looker makes, I think they mostly do. The 009 is frankly a horrid dizzy - made for a high revving over-worked 1200cc bus engine. Still, it's the trendy thing to have. You time it at 28 - 30 degrees max total advance (crankshaft degrees) to stop the pistons melting. Just let it find its own idle timing - they are so badly made these days it can vary a lot. I'd say the carb sounds too rich - that's normal too. If you had a vac advance carb it might be timing, but yours is all centrifugal.

You won't be looking for good mpg anyway, so don't worry about the lack of vacuum advance on the 009.

Try mailing Neil Verdon, who's a Brit. in Germany - he seems well up in performance mods. snipped-for-privacy@t-online.de
