Single Port Intakes

I am interested in making or buying a set of single port head intakes for dual carbs. How hard are they to make? Can I take a couple of single intake, single carb manifolds and cut and weld a set? I want to try running dual carbs on my bug, I got a couple 30pict carbs and would only need to intakes for each one to do it. Plus the linkage of course.

Opinions/advise welcome

I'm no expert here but maybe this info will help a little? I've got dual kads on a single port motor I'm still not finished with. As far as construction of the intakes, they look pretty simply made. the only diffucult areas I would see is that the tube gets bigger as it goes up and the 3/4 side has some bends in it to bring it rearward and inline with 1/2. The increase in tubing size may not be as much of an issue for you as the barrel of the 30's re going to be smaller. But I think you would have your work cut out for you on the linkage because of position of the arms on the carbs. I think I have some pics (or can take some) of my carbs/intakes installed on the motor if you think it will help.

There is no performance gain when using two stock 30PICT carbs. It will probably run worse than stock. Fit some single barrel performance carbs instead, for which you can also find ready made manifolds and linkage.

Thanks Bill, that is an interesting statement. I wonder why there would be not improved performance? I just wanted to use what I had on hand as I don't want to spend the amount that another set of carbs would cost.

First of all, the flow though a carb is not constant, but in pulses, one at each intake stroke. The intake pulses from the different cylinders are not overlapped in the T1 engine, which means that each cylinder intake sucks air one at a time.

By adding two stock carbs, the only thing you improve in the induction path, is the restriction of the manifold. You might think that this may add performance, but this is not necessary true. That is because at lower engine rpm, the flow is small and so is the restriction on the manifold. At higher rpms you have a slight improvement. But if you keep anything else stock, your engine won't benefit by the increased flow at higher rpms, because it won't be able to rev higher anyway and because the bottleneck of the induction system will remain the stock carb.

Thanks for the pics. Are those stock carbs or larger?
