Solex 34pict3 vs Dellorto's 36 DRLA

The heater riser of my manifold is blocked. I know where I can find one with a larger tube that never blocks to replace mine for a very low cost with installation. The situation is that on the same place, there also a set of rebuild Dellortos 36 DRLA for a very nice price, because people are throwing the Alfa Romeo cars to the junkyards. I know that I have to buy new manifolds and air cleaners and maybe a new distributor. I would like to know the benefits of such set up. I think that Jan can help me on theses and also the guys that use this set-up. It is amazing that a few years ago, I was trying to find some dome pitons, to put my 1300DP engine stock again and now I?m thinking on putting a set of Dellorto on my new 1600DP FYI my 1600DP is an upgrade I did to my 1300DP

Having done the dual-carb thing in the past, I can tell you that unless you like pulling the carburetors to change spark plugs you would be better off keeping the factory intake.

Having said that, you can clear the heat riser tube yourself with a drill and a clutch cable(an old cable is just fine). You cut the cable so that it is a little longer than one half the length of the heat riser tube. Cut it measured from the THREADED end. Then you chuck the threaded end into a reversible drill and use the cable as a roto-rooter tool to grind the carbon out out of the preheat tube. It took me a couple afternoons to clear the tubes on my 74 super, and it has the 74 only 'dual preheat' manifold. I found that reversing the drill periodically as well as tapping things with hammer helped speed things up a bit.

You will be astounded at how much better your bug runs with the pre-heat system working as it should.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for your input. I will not clean it, because as I told before I can get a replacement and the installation for 60 euros. For that price I will not try to do it myself. The carb I have now installed is a borrowed Bomcar while I'm waiting to get my hands on an old solex 34-pict3 in good shape for free. (my carb was a solex 31pict3) If I can?t find one, I have to buy a new one and I can get the dellorto with the manifold and air cleaners for almost the same price of a new Solex. Maybe I will keep the Solex for now and let see what I will do next year. This evening I will meet with a guy that putted dual dellorto 36 and I will see how it works.

More inputs are welcome

At the very least I would keep the old manifold(i.e. demand it back from the shop). It's been my experience that the OEM stuff is usually far better than the aftermarket equipment.

The 34pict-3 is a good carburetor so long as the throttle shaft is a good fit within the casting and all of the idle circuit passages are clear. I had rimco(in California) replace the throttle shaft bushings in my casting(dated 1989), as the 'new' bocar 34pict-3's just look crappy. The castings are just...terrible looking. If you hold the new ones in your hand compared to an older one you will see what I'm talking about.

If the carburetor you are getting is still tight around the thottle shafft then I would just put a kit in it and see how it does. If you have play in the throttle shaft you need to have that repaired prior to rebuilding the thing or you will never get it to idle correctly.

Thanks for your advice. I think I know where I can get the shaft bushings replaced. I will keep the

34pict-3 for now.
