Stripped oil pan bolt

Help!! I had a stripped 6mm oil pan bolt hole that kept dripping oil (the bolt used to come out of the pan every time I tried to take the nut off). I tried to tap out the hole to accept an 8mm to 6mm stepdown bolt. Bottom line is that I took too much metal out so the stepdown is very loose and drips even more oil than before. Does anyone know of any way to repair this screwup?

Thanks,

Ernie

i just recently did my first helicoil insert, and they work beautifully, so perhaps an insert (with the correct diameter drillbit) will work for you.

otherwise, if it is just a bit loose, the other trick i learnt is to use loctite to anchor it in place for once and for ever. a high strength loctitte, such as 270 perhaps this will cure your leak.

Maybe your local hardware store has some kind of expanding "anchor" inserts that would work here. Use good sealant around the bolt hole and you should be fine? A helicoil or a solid insert would work well here. I'd go with solid because there's so little material around the hole. Loctite it to the case with Loctite 270 or 290.

Why not just replace the oil drain plug housing. Should be readily avaliable as a used part and Wolfsburg West has the new part for $6 plus $1 for a new drain plug.Much easier than heli-coil inserts.Fred67bug
