Tail Light Weirdness

Long time lurker, first time poster...

I've got a '69 Transporter, originally imported into Central America. In trying to sort out some wiring problems, I've discovered that the wiring runs in this bus are different than the ones shown on the wiring diagram in Bentley. I'm assuming that the wiring follows some non-USA standard, and can't find the appropriate diagram for this year even on vintagebus.com. Or perhaps the PO just royally screwed everything up.

One question: what's the correct wiring setup for the tail-lights? I have a dual bulb set-up...one big dual-filament bulb (with two leads, obviously) and one small bulb on each side (one lead on this one). I can find wiring diagrams for this set-up, but for each side they all show a brake wire, a turn-signal, and a parking light wire coming from the front of the vehicle. I only have two wires for each side...one from the turn-signal and one for the parking lights.

And speaking of brakes, how does the brake-light circuit work? Mine doesn't seem to match any available wiring diagram. I have a red and black wire coming off the brake light switches, but this is not near long enough to run to the back of the vehicle. I'm assuming that this needs to connect to the flashers or turn-signals at the dash and this signal gets to the back of the bus via the turn-signal wires.

Using trial-and-error and wiring diagrams from other years, I've managed to get the turn signals and parking lights to work. But I still have no brake lights and the hazards now only flash on one side (?).

Does anyone have any insight onto the correct way to wire this sucker? If I can get everything hooked up correctly, then I'll feel a lot better about checking grounds and continuity and searching for other electrical gremlins.

Turn signal switch should have 6 wires on that year. VW used a single filament (on each side) for BOTH turn and brake lights. The signal switch determines which function the filament is used for.

The wire from the brake switch(es) goes to Term #54 on the 9-term flasher or the Hazard switch.

If you have the 9-term flasher, download the '68 diagram. If not, use the '69/70 diagram.

In the back, you should have a Blk/Yell for Left side and a Blk/Rd for Right side lamp. And 2 gray w/stripe for tail lights/license light.

If the small lamps you describe are on the side of the vehicle, these are "Marker" lights and get connected to the tail light wires.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I should expect no less from someone who goes by "Speedy" Jim.

I now understand the brake light issue...I was eyeing suspiciously that unused #54 terminal on my flasher switch yesterday and wondering what the deal was.

About the turn signals...my original post was a bit garbled about explaining this issue: I have a tail light fixture with two bulbs inside. I don't have any side markers. The big bulb in the tail light housing has two leads coming off of it, the small bulb has one. If I connect the blk/rd wire to one big bulb lead and the gray wire to the small bulb lead, what do I do with the extra lead coming off the big bulb?

Sorry about being unclear in my first post.

Ah. Perhaps the orphan bulb was for backup lights.

On the big bulb, note that there is a difference between the 2 filaments. The heavier (brighter) filament goes to the Blk/Yell or Blk/Rd wire. The smaller to the Gray w/stripe.

If in doubt I always run new wires. Check the grounds twice and I have had the directional control box fail to send the right "message' to the brake lights. well, good luck. gawd, I hate electrical problems.

I've seen some double red or amber/red lights that had two bulbs and 1/2 leads that worked as follows:

Single lead: turn signal and usually involves a 1156 lamp Dual lead: Brake/tail light and usually involves a 1157 lamp. I believe some of the Type 1's were wired up that way. Both units have ground returns.
