Timing Question?

I just bought this fiberglass dune buggy with a 71 dual port 1600 engine in it. It had the 009 distributor in it and had the dreaded flat spot on take off notorious with this distributor when combined with the 34 pict 3 solex. So I bought a new original equipment bosch dual vacuum distributor. This solved my problem except for one thing. This combination is supposed to be timed at 5 degrees ATDC. Well it runs terrible with the vacuum retard hooked up and timed as per specification. The vacuum hoses are routed correctly. I disconnected and pluged the vacuum retard using only the vacuum advance portion of the can and timed it to 7.5 degrees BTDC and it runs like a champ.

My concern is..... will this distributor throw in too much total advance timed in this manner? The distributor has both vacuum and cetrifugal advance. The car runs strong but I can't hear what is going on with the engine as the dual exhaust pipes make to darn much noise.

Thanks, Jerry

Dear Jerry (and the Group),

It shouldn't. But it's easy enough to check.

Using a stroboscopic timing light and with a degree wheel installed -- or other method of determining the firing point -- open the throttle and determine the firing point at high speed.

Although dragsters may use as much as 40 degrees of advance, the normal range for most VW engines is 28 to 32 degrees, with the lower figure used by those more interested in long-term reliability.

If your distributor gives you MORE than 28 degrees total advance, simply re-set your static timing point. If you see LESS than 28 you may want to tweak the centrifugal section of your distributor, since advancing the static firing point beyond 7.5 degrees will make the engine a bit harder to start.

Make sure you disconnect the vacuum advance hose when you do this test. You want vacuum advance out of the equation. [vacuum advance goes away on full throttle under a load] You only want to read centrifugal advance total.
