Towing with a 2000 VW Beetle

I am moving from Nevada to Virginia in about 5 weeks. The most cost effective choice for me is towing a u-haul trailer (4 by 8) I only am moving one piece of furniture (an oak blanket chest) the rest will be some boxes a 20 inch TV and my computer. I dont think i will even make it close to the capacity.

I have gone ahead and schedule the hitch installtion and reserved the trailer. .. but I wanted to get some tips and advice on how to drive this thing... and if it will even be safe? I also would like to know how my car will handle the load.

I have a 2000 Beetle GLX Turbo Engine... not sure on exact stats... I am not a car person.

Thanks in Advance!

Try the watercooled group !

If it were air cooled we all could answer :-)

something along the lines of ...

Wow you have a 2l in your bug !!! who built it ? type 1 or IV ?? what tranny you got etc etc...

Also - make sure your brakes are in A1 condition .

My experience with u-haul is that they will not rent a trailor that is not suitable for your vehicle. Probably liability issues. Vehicle brakes are probably the biggest factor since the trailor does not have them. Have you checked your owner's manual about towing capacities? - Bob

the beetle can tow 2000 pounds, I have checked with u-haul and everything is fine. I just want to make sure the beetle can handle it.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but you pretty much answered your own question.

Uh Volks,

Automatic or standard? If auto, you should consider getting the auto tranny cooling unit installed. If standard you are good to go.
