..................All you need from the squareback are the backing plates, splined hubs, slave cylinders and drums along with new shoes & hardware kits. Everything will fit like it was made for your bug. You may want to consider buying new drums & slave cylinders depending on the condition of the ones on the squareback.

............Oh BTW, the larger type3 slave cylinders will increase the front/rear braking bias to the rear. When I did this some time ago, I ran rear tires that were larger than the front ones which seemed to work OK. If you're not going to do that, I think that I've heard somewhere that the original type1 cylinders will work with the larger drums & back plates. I'm not sure about this but if I'm wrong, you'll still have the type3 ones from that squareback.

..............BTW #2.........You didn't mention whether you're running discs or drums on the front. My experience was with drums up front and I now think that this upgrade doesn't make much sense without the discs on the front end. I have what I need to put type3 drums on the back of my '77 std. but I've been putting it off until I can afford to get rid of the front drums. If you brake really hard on a wet surface or whatever, the front drums will allow those rear ones to do more than they should even when running bigger tires in the back end and you'll find yourself fighting to stay facing the direction that your going!.........btdt

Hi Baven, This modifcation is explained in detail in a Hot VW's Totally Tech Special magazine dated Summer 2002 page 92. very informative. I'm currently doing this same mode to my '76 resto custom Type 1. Will be running disc brakes on front end. If you don't have access to this article email me your address and I'll send you a copy.

....................One thing that didn't come up is that swing-axle type1's have shorter axles (the threaded end with the 36mm nut). I've never tried putting them (type3 drums) on a swing axle bug but I've read that the type3 hubs have to be machined down some (1/2"?) on the surface where the axle nut sits. You'd need to talk to someone else who actually knows what they're talking about like John Connolly.

thanks I'll wait to swap them until I get that front disc brake kit I've been looking at. Once I have the discs up front will the braking still be biased to the back? or will it be ok then. thanks for the info

.............That's a question that I'm not real sure about. I think that there'll still be some increase in braking bias to the rear but not as much as with the drums on the front. I'm not real sure though and it would be better if someone else who knows for sure would answer instead.
