Type I Stalls-Hard To Start

Hi! I have a 1973 VW Beetle with a stock 1600cc DP Type I.

A few months ago I replaced the fuel hoses with 4.8mm Diameter hoses that I got from a local parts store. This weekend I replaced the oil bath air cleaner with a stock OEM paper element air cleaner. Then I started it up. It had a lower idle after changing the air cleaner. Could the extra volume of intake air have attributed to this? I raised the idle but did not adjust the carb. It seems to be performing OK now.

I also noticed an occasional air bubble passing through the fuel filter and an almost lack of fuel in the filter. Ususally at idle speed, the fuel filter is almost full. Could the smaller diameter fuel hose be acting like a pinched fuel line and be restricting the fuel flow? Could this cause extra wear on the fuel pump?

I sent off for the correct diameter, 5.5mm Diamter, fuel hoses today. Thanks! JP

It's normal for bubbles to appear and for the filter to look empty. In fact, the carb is only drawing a tiny dribble of fuel at idle.

The change of air cleaner could have affected idle speed. You should not adjust idle by opening the throttle stop screw; use the larger "air bypass" control on the left side of carb. The throttle stop is set so the throttle plate is completely closed, but not jamming.

You should check the timing setting ( must use a strobe light), as this will greatly affect idle speed.

Strongly recommend getting the Bentley Official Manual for '70 -'79.

Josef The bubbles stopped and the filter looks almost fuel of fuel again after I tightened the clamps on the fuel filter. Apparently I forgot to tighten them sufficiently after changinf the fuel filter last weekend. Speedy Jim The change of air cleaner could have affected idle speed. Josef Roger. Affirmitive. That's what I did. I adjusted the larger "air bypass" control screw on the left side of the carb. I also have a large VDO Cockpit style tach on my dash to help set the corect idle rpm.

Josef I have an SVDA dizzy that I got from John C. at aircooled.net. Last Fall I checked it and it was set at 7.5 degrees btdc with a strobe light. I will be sure to check it again.

Josef I already have one but it is so clean I dont want to use it. I keep it in 'the shrine'. Maybe I should get another one that I can get my grimy hands on.

Thanks again! JFP

Yes it is ;) I always read mine in the livingroom lying on the sofa before some repair work. Then go out to do the actual work. That way I can keep it in good condition.

.....................I have enough 'short term memory loss' (keep quiet joey and travis!), that I occasionally have to have the Bentley sitting right there while I'm working and sometimes I even have to have a greasy finger on the specific line of words while wearing reading glasses and trying to work with the other hand and holding a flashlight in my mouth.

Oh, I'll keep quiet about this one. I can hardly remember how to get home from work at the end of the day. :-/

I also have some other godd VW manuals like the Robert Haynes VW Beetle manual and the John Muir How To Keep Your Aircooled VW Alive Book. I also try and watch my VW beetle 'Bug Me' videos once a week.
