Woo hoo! New Bug!

Got a line on a '64 beetle sitting in a known "side of the road car lot". Was told this one was sitting in a woodshed for the past ten years (tabs/plates were from 1995). Looks like the floorpans were replaced prior to that (Not sure how good the job was done, feels really solid, haven't checked all the welding or stuff yet. The water test seems to be working ok (One of the windows is leaking water into the bug, and the pan is holding water... :)

The Good: Still 6V. (OK, some people would consider 1939 technology to be bad... :) Apparently solid pan Mostly solid doors. They are starting to think about rusting, and need to be dealt with this summer. Good hood/decklid Interior complete and could almost be considered nice. All chrome still there.

4 new tires. Some parts for this are still in the original blue boxes with VW rebuild stamps on them Get the original 40hp motor, unknown condition. Apparently it "knocks" 1600sp in it right now, runs really strong. Steering, etc. seems tight.

The Bad ENGINE TIN. Yikes, missing a lot. BRAKES. I don't trust 10 year old brakes much anymore. Have to pump them at least once to get any sort of pressure, so they are at a minimum way out of adjustment. None of the heater system is hooked up. The duct taped fan shroud is just freaking LOVELY. They put 5 lug bus wheel on using the wide 5 to small 5 adapter thingys, which just tick me off for some reason. Either needs a clutch adjustment, or a clutch. Probably both. :) Seems to need shift bushings in the shift rod. Outside paint is almost good, inside/floor/trunk was apparently a "project" for some retarded kids who needed to fingerpaint. It's THICK all over, but everything seems to be solid.

So, all parts there, kinda working, only drove this for a mile or so, bought it. :)

I think with a good weekend I will have a really nice driver for a while, until I get my '67 beetle un-DPO'ed. (Typical "Let's remove ALL the parts, wiring (of course cut the wiring where it's inconvenient to remove) and remove the engine and other stuff so we can restore this bug, then never get around to it" type of thing.)

Damnit Eric! Now I know why I can't find anything decent. You've been buying them all!

Sounds alright but definately going to need some TLC. Good luck

From a '71 SB I looked at about a year ago... I'd imagine that the knocking of the engine will get louder fast if it is run without the tin very long.

No, the "original" 40 hp is what he claimed was knocking, not the 1600 sp. I chickened out and towed the bug home, and started the brake work (I always replace every piece of brake hardware on anything I get.)

Passenger rear: 3 hours. This all looked original (as in crusty, rusty, the pads had fallen off, most of this time was cleaning everything, and freeing up the adjusters.)

Driver's rear: about 20 minutes. This side looked almost NEW. Mostly because this side wasn't working AT ALL. lol.

Front brakes next, then heating, then some clutch cleaning/adjusting, then tin, ack, I'd better get busy. :)
