1989 240 DL Squeeling

Some days when I start it up and give it some gas I hear a squeeling from the engine. Other days I dont. On the days I do, it goes away after running for a little bit. Any thoughts?

Also, I just got the exhaust replaced...went from the CAT, with a pipe directly to the muffler...nothing in between. This ok? I figure less constriction of air.

Are you sure it's coming from the engine and not the blower motor?

when in the car and I rev the engine when I first start it up....it sounds like its coming from the engine compartment. Where is the blower motor. What does it do im new to volvo repair and mods. Thanks.

I'm no expert, either, but I'm unfortunately familiar with this particular problem, which is common in 240s. The blower motor is kind of what the name implies, the motor that runs the blower for your fan/heating/air. When they start to go, they make the most godawful squealing, and it's a big/expensive job to have it replaced.

Hi Peter,

Re the "squealing": Could be the drive belts (fan belt etc.). This could easily be confirmed by getting a can of "Belt Dressing" and spraying the belts while the engine is running and squealing. (Mind your fingers!) If the squealing stops, you've identified the culprit.

The belts will have to be replaced eventually, but I'm still spraying after

220 000 Km from new.........

First option, start engine and run a fine spray of WD 40 over the fan belts.

I will certainly check the belts first tomorrow. The sound does not happen at all unless I rev it....and it only happens for the first two times I hit the gas, then stops

Aha! When you rev it. Sounds like loose belts. Traction is OK without stress. When drive pulley accellerates, the belt isn't tight enough to follow, so it squeals.

Also look for belt-driven accessories sliding forward on their mounts. This will cause bad squeal, and eventually belts twisting over in their path and breaking. Caused by rubber mount bushings (on the underside of these accessories) deteriorating, letting the accy. shift forward - now it's pulley is out of line with the drive belt's other pulley. Happened to my '86 240.

It may not be just the belts but belt alignment. As I recall, the alternator uses 3 rubber mounting bushings and the power steering pump uses 4 bushings . All are the same type and can be ordered off of the net for about $2.00 each. The bushings get old and soft and no matter how much tension you put on new belts, you will still have squeal as the alternator is out of alignment. I replaced the mounting bushings on my 240 and the belt noise disappeared.
