1990 240 - poor starting

We love our Volvo but lately whenever the weather's a bit damp, the thing turns over but refuses to start and eventually floods. It has fuel injection. Almost like it doesn't want to drive around in anything but warm weather . . . .it's becoming human!! My mechanic has tuned it but scratches his head now. No luck at all. Any tips we could try? Thanks.

New plug wires and new coil wire with some dielectric grease applied at the connections with the plugs, distributor and coil. That solves this problem with my car. Also, buy good quality wires (e.g., Bosch) intended for the 240; cheap wires tend not to seal well enough around the connections, allowing in moisture and shorting the spark to ground.

Check for cracked distributor cap.

Check for faulty coil.

Check for bad battery connections and especially the grounds.

Good luck!

That's exactly what I was gonna say. Classic symptom of moisture in worn out components of the ignition system. If that all fails, the ignition coil may be bad and producing a weak spark but that's rare.

Thanks to both Tim & James, I'm going to do as you both suggest as I've spent too much money expecting my garage to fix it. It sounds logical too. . . .Eddy
