1997 2.5D V70 injectors query

Hi, I am in the South UK with one of the above which sounds like it has an intermittent misfire... cold cranking current is pretty even across all cylinders so I am wondering if it is a poor injector spray pattern and time for an injector overhaul ( 165,000 miles ) ?

Economy still seems good at low to mid 40's to the UK gallon, but it sounds sick at idle and up to 2500 rpm, burns no oil between changes and is otherwise going well..

If so, what is the least expensive path to get this done ? Overhaul or replace with new / re-furbed items and who does a good price ?

Thanks,

Nick

Didnt you ask about this about 6 weeks ago?

I think we said then that at 165k the injectors would be well past their best.

Hi Baz, Should I also check the distributor cap and plugs ? Thanks, Nick

It would be an interesting DIESEL engine (the clue is in the 'D' of 2.5D!) which had ignition leads and spark plugs!

Indeed it is a diesel....

Yes, Tim - I did ask about this a while back, and further looking into it still seems to point to injectors... however I "lost" my PC hard drive and couldn't remember any replies or if I had asked whether anyone could tell me where to get injectors re-furbed, or if new was the only option, so I repeated the query again in full, for any new readers, together with the request for info for places to get re-furbed, to give them the full picture... apologies for the part repetition...

Thanks, Nick

I don't know the answer but the engine is/was made by Audi, and the injectors are probably common to a lot of engines - and certainly not Volvo specific. So they'll almost certainly be cheaper if they're not in Volvo packaging.

Look for a specialist Diesel service centre in your area. Yellow pages is your friend!

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the info so far - I have identified a local to me injector overhauler who will test for a fiver each and refurb for another £25 each which seems pretty fair... assuming it IS a single stage injector in these engines...

You suggested I obtained a Haynes 3573 manual which I am having difficulty getting locally.

The Halfords near me has a large number and I was wondering if you knew if this engine is used in another car (Audi?) where the engine info will be pretty much the same, and hopefully there will be a manual for that available on the shelf....

Not having removed an injector before, I am wondering if I must do associated things, like replace any seals / washers... so I only really need the paragraph detailing the removal / replacement of the injectors (I think !)

Thanks, Nick

Sorry - another question or three if that's OK ?

Just had a look at the injectors, with the aim of removal, and note the following:

It looks like removal of the glowplug cables would make things easier - do these pull off?

The retaining bolt on each injector is a 6mm Hex head socket cap situated in the middle of a "bridge", one side which seems to press/hold the injector into position, the other side on some sort of spacer - does this fall out or is it attached to the "cross member", and when removed, does the injector pull out or unscrew - I imagine it pulls out as otherwise there would be no need for the bolt / spacer etc. In that case is there an O ring or two on the body of the injector which will need replacing ?

and (last query)

the "master" injector with the cable - the connector at the difficult-to-see end, how does that unplug / come apart as it's very difficult to get at - do I have to remove the vacuum pump for access ?

Thanks again,

Nick

Hi Nick,

When I suggested getting a Haynes manual, it was in connection with things like brakes. The Haynes manual for the Volvo 70-series only covers petrol engines - so the diesel ain't in it unfortunately.

If you send me a private email with a valid email address, I'll email you a page from the Volvo VADIS system, telling you how to change the injectors. [Post here to confirm that you've done it because, as per my sig, I don't look at gmail very often].

I've never touched the injectors on my 1999 V70 2.5D, so don't have any direct experience. But see my other post.
