2001 V70XC Tire Selection

I have to replace my all season tires this spring and am looking for advice. Last fall there was a major discussion of tire preferenced and I believe the Michelin Hydroedge was given 2 thumbs up by several group contributors. They would be for 12 month use, and long life and comfort, rather than "performance" with a sacrifice on the comfort side is what I am looking for.

Would appreciate your comments as to whether the Hydroedge is still the popular choice or is there another tire that should be considered.

Thanks, Gerry

The original equipment on the '01 V70XC was Pirelli Scorpion S/T

215/65R16 tires. It was the first year of the V70XC redesign which was a big improvement over the previous V70XC. Since it was being tested as a new model, the Scorpions were chosen so the car would have the best performance numbers when tested. The surprising thing is that they not only perform well like most Pirelli's do, but they last which most Pirelli's don't. They make over 55,000 miles easily. Gas mileage around town has been 22-23 mpg.  On the highway it is 24-26.  I love the Pirelli Scorpion's that came with the car.  They do great on flooded highways and in snow. They also are great on the open road. On any FWD/AWD vehicle you need to rotate the tires regularly to insure even wear.  I have my Volvo dealer check my tires every routine service (7,500 miles) and see if they need rotating.  The reason I stick with the Scorpions is that they drive great and have never shown uneven wear. By the way I was surprised to find that a set of Scorpions from the Volvo dealer cost about the same as more poorly rated tires from Sears.  Sears doesn't carry a tire as good as the Scorpions (their words, not mine).
