2006 C70 Convertible

Hi, We've just ordered a C-70, sight unseen, that is due in around the end of May. From what we were told there are only 2000 due to be made in 06. Our dealer is getting six. Talk about scarce. Anyway if any one in the group has any experience with the car we would appreciate your comments. Once we get ours we'll post our reactions. Right now the only thing that concerns me is the long term operation of the roof, not mention leaks.

Let us know how you get on. They are supposed to have almost no boot/trunk space when the roof is down so it would be interesting to read your views.

I ordered my C70 back in February. I got a call from my dealer saying that the launch date for the 1st batch isn't until July 15th now (at the earliest). I was also told that they haven't even begun production of the 1st orders so in all likelihood, they won't be ready by mid-July either.

Any news?

I spotted one yesterday at the dealer, a woman was taking it for a test drive I believe.

It's a great looking car, and of course I was seriously curious about that new convertible top operation.

As luck would have it, the woman pulled it around the front and actually "dropped the top" in front of me.

What a thrill!

It folded together in 3 pieces like a big sandwich, she had to hold the button for about 30 seconds to complete the closing ceremony, I guess you drop the side windows a bit, and hold the button and wait for a tone to tell you it's done.

It's an amazing engineering feat, I notice LOTS of hardware on the frame of the top that makes it work.

I also notices practically NO storage space in the trunk also, this top takes up some serious real estate when it's (opened) and in the trunk.

Trunk space is not a real feature with these convertibles, but I believe I could live with it myself if I needed to.

Sticker on this particular model I believe was around 45,000 US.

What a great car, I hope to find one later in life as a pre-owned model, but I hope there's extended warrnaties that will cover that top; as it sure has lots of parts involved in the process.

The SLK (as well as the latest SL body style) has worked like this for years.

Ditto the SLK/SL.

I have trouble with the trunk space of my '99 softtop C70. Anything less immediately eliminates a vehicle from consideration for me.

Well we received a phone call Monday that the demo is in! We plan on taking it for a test ride tonight. After that I'll post our reactions. Should be a fun evening.

OK, we took our test ride yesterday and it was sweet. Sorry to say we didn't get on a major highway. Our dealer is located in the city so most of the time we were on brick streets. With 18 inch low profile tires the ride was a little rough. However we did not feel and torsion effects on the body. With the top up the car is very quiet and the headliner looks just as you would expect in a sedan or coupe. In short very well done. To ensure a quiet car the drivers and passenger windows drop down about a 1/2" when you open the door. This results in the glass moving up into a groove in the rubber gasket after you close the door. In watching the top being raised and lower I notice some small steel springs that must have something to do tensioning the headliner . Kinda unusual to see something that small exposed. Hope they don't get loose or break over time. Given all the bells and whistles we are going to borrow the owners manual from the demo around the time ours is delivered

Actually it has nothing to do with keeping the car quieter - is that what the dealer said? ;) It happens on all modern cabriolets (all the ones I;ve driven anyway) and is due to the fact that the window doesn't have a full frame that opens along with it. If it didn't move down and out then you would never get a proper seal like you would do in a standard car.
