240 Fuel Tank remove and replace

Hello, I removed and replaced my in-tank fuel pump on my 240 (1991) I had a tough time getting the tank to line up with the fuel intake metal "tube" and then attaching the clamp that holds the two together. I finally got them to match and then attached the clamp. Now I smell fuel when I drive the car. I think that the clamp did not fit on the two pieces perfectly. Is there a easy or more correct method to get the two pieces to fit together more flush, so that the clamp fits correctly. It is difficult to hold the tank in place using my legs, knees and arms while attaching the clamp and then tightening it up.

When i replaced my in tank pump i could smell fuel for a while, and all i did was left the back windows down overnight. The smell of the fuel had entered the trunk and ended up in the rear seat cushion, and we all know how easily car seats hold in a smell. Exactly the same thing happened when i had my car converted to LPG, just left the windows down and the smell went away. That said, its not the safest assumption to make :P

I will attempt that....It would be a blessing to have it just go away. Thanks, Joseph
