Having just brought a 360 GLT i am planning to do a few road rallies in it, but the braking department concerns me as it only has solid discs on the front. I understand that the 240s had vented discs so is it possible to simply put the calipers/discs/pads from a 240 on my 360 or are the hubs completely different?
Friad so- 200 / 700 series use 5 stud hubs, which you may be able to transplant at the front, wheels and all, but more than likely it would be a hassle.
We had an 84 GLEi and that had vented front (Bendix) discs...Perhaps see if you can lay your hands on a Ferodo or similar brake pads / discs book, or ring ECP and ask them what they have listed.
Well i've been looking thru the ECP catalogue and no other Volvo had the same brake discs as the 300s, although the Audi 80 has the same pads which could be useful to know if i'm looking for some uprated ones. However i've heard a rumour that 400 vented brakes may fit so i may take a trip to the scrappie soon and investigate further.
I used to 'test' my many 360s over a hill circuit in the hills above my town. It was great fun, but what I learnt was that if the brakes have all the proper stuff they don't fade, but if anything is not in top condition they did. You have to use the proper thin material Textar pads, with good thick disks, and proper dot 4/5 fresh fluid. The rears also need to be in top spec condition. That lasted a good 15 mins thrashing over a hilly, bendy road with a long enough straight at the end that really needed the brakes, I guess some ducting from the front would produce enough extra cooling to survive full rally abuse, but shouldn't need uprating unless you increase the power.
Watch out for the back end, it can get pretty twitchy when the rear axle is bent, worse in pre-87 high compression engines which have more torque.
Having said that Tarox used to do grooved disks for the 360, don't know if they still exist. You could also try a fluid pump cooling kit.
