440 questions

I have a couple of issues with my 440 and wondered if anyone could shed some light

1) Car only just scraped through UK imisions test, Oxygen (lambda) reading in on the high side. It originally failed on the CO2% put fixing this has put the lambda up. Cars lambda sensor has been changed very recently.

2) I have a squealing noise from the engine, the noise is rev related and sounds more like a bearing noise than the alternator belt slipping. I was thinking water pump, or timing pully bearings. Does anyone know a common fault on the B16F that would cause this symptom

3) Does anyone know how to test a heated mirror element, i bought the mirrors and wiring looms needed from the breakers and have fitted then in my car. Only the laft hand side mirror gets warm. I'm thinking that the element in the RHS is bust.

Thanks for help and advice given

Happy xmas and all the best for new year

Regards

Don't know. Depending on age and mileage the cat may be on its way out.

Water pump is a possibility: check for leakage. Spray some WD40 on belts, if the noise goes away then it may be a slipping or worn belt.

Put an ohm-meter on it. If it's broken then the resistance is infinite. Check the power, it's not a blown fuse isn't it?

Same to you, drive safely.

HI

first thanks for the reply

The middle section of my exhaust pipe broke today, just on the join with the read, although there was no exhaust noise before, it must have been leaking, that would be the cause of the emmisions problems, air pulled in to the system after the cat!

As for the mirrors, the left hand side on works on but the right hand doesn't. I am yet to test it with the ohn meter (wire color - yellow with red stripe and bodywork earth) but will do soon, i see lots taken off in breakers so it must be common

thanks

Well, that explains the lamda sensor output. So the bad news is that you need to repair the exhaust. The good news is that an exhaust is very likely a lot cheaper than a new cat.

Merry Christmas
