5-cylinder diesel variants

The diesel options for the current V70 come in 2 flavours - 163PS and 185PS. They both have the same 2.4L capacity.

Does anyone know whether the different power outputs are simply due to chipping - or whether there are any physical differences in the engines?

Both the same engines- different software.

Buy the 163 and have superchips / other treat it for 190bhp.

Bull-shit. The greates difference is not the engine: the 185 hp version comes with a 6-gear-automatic and the 163 hp with a 5-gear. The stronger engine has different injectors with a 5-hole design and the turbo-geometrie is variable. IIRC even the intercooler design is slightly different.

Not quite true - in the UK at any rate. Whether opting for the 163PS (not

*quite* HP) or 185PS engine, you get a choice of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed auto transmission.

So I'm interested in differences which apply specifically to the *engine*.

AFAIK the European engines are the same, certainly the 163 unit over here also uses a VGT turbo...
