740 GL Heater Blower Motor

Hello All I have an '89 740GL daily driver with 284,000 miles and still going strong.Only problem is the fan motor runs intermittenly. That is it may work on the way to work or store but after shutting off car and running errands or working it fails to work again.Other cars I have had in the past 30 years have done this when the ignition switch needed to be replaced. Anyone know if this is a common problem and if their is a fix.Other than replacing the motor itself. This also happened in the summer with the A/C.I thought maybe there is a wiring connector on the firewall that may need to be cleaned or replugged. Please reply on news group only. Thanks

Actually it's an A/C Delco fan! There are a few electrical connections inside the blower cage that might be corroded and causing the intermittent operation. If you hear a bearing noise, then it's time to replace the fan motor. It's not too difficult a job to do and one that I've documented for a 1985 740 I owned.

I had heard the fan motor was a GM part. The fan does not make any noise at all when it does run.All 4 speeds are fine when it runs,so I would think the resistor pack is OK. Must be a loose connection somewhere!

Yes, AC/Delco makes the fans for GM and they're also used in Volvo 700 series cars, at least the older ones. It's the same part as a Citation and Celebrity use.

Does the fan ever stop when you are driving. When the fan will not work have you checked also to see if the radio is working, electric windows etc as it could just be your ignition switch.

I have the same problem all I do is move the key when its in the ignition.

Success at last! Finally had good weather this weekend and was able to poke my head into the blower motor problem.I was able to determine that the connection at the motor was faulty. The white 2 pin connector on the motor was not making good contact. I just wiggled and pushed it on and it started working. It could have been accidently kicked by someones foot since it is open and not well protected.
