740GLE

Looking at a 740GLE on a 'D' plate (87-88?) and was trying to work out exactlyu which engine it has. There's no "Turbo" badge on the car so I'm assuming it doesn't have one (don't want a turbo). Will this have a B23 or

230 in all likelihood? The place is shut today so I can't ask, but want to be genned-up when I go back tomorrow.

Thx for advice :-)

My '86 240 has a B230F engine - I'd guess that by '87 all 270's also had B230F's.

Turbo engines also came with cast alloy wheels - another way to get an idea of what's under the hood.

I have a 86 non-turbo with alloy wheels and a turbo grill. I changed them because it looks better. The only way to tell is to open the hood. The turbo is on the exhaust manifold . There will also be a "BOOST" gauge on the instrument cluster.

The B23 engine was last produced in '84, from '85 onwards it was replaced by B230, which has lower internal friction.

With my limited knowledge of models available in UK, I'd guess a 'D' plate has a B230E engine. _________________ Will '90 Volvo 744 GLT B230F converted to B230FB (531 Head & VX3 Cam)

It has a B230 in it assuming it's stock, not sure what variant, over here they were all injected B230F's, but it might have a carb, should be dead easy to tell by peeking under the hood, as with the turbo, can't miss it if it's there.

Thx for all replies :-)

Just been down to have a thorough look at the car armed with what I now know. There were a tremendous number of anomolies. The worse was the mileage - 44k ont he speedo, but a quick flick through the paperwork showed service records at 169,000 etc. Thats fine, it might have had a new speedo etc. But for some reason, the mileages didn't folow any date order on the paperwork. So unless it's had at least four different speedo's, I smell a large rat!

Turned out to have the B230K and a red filler cap. I presume that means unleaded only or 98 octane. All seemed to work ok, and it sounded sweet as a nut. Major bummer was the headlining, which was completely knackered.I couldnt have lived with it as its showing the orangey-coloured sponge where the fabric has been ripped off.

It was an interesting exercise, but I'll wait for something better to come along. There's no good reason that the average [traditional] Volvo owner would allow things to get that bad.

Red filler cap is for cars that can take leaded, although it's safe to run on unleaded too. Unleaded only cars have green filler caps.

Headliner's a very common problem for 740's of this vintage. Even my 740 which was purchased brand new by my parents and meticulously maintained, headliner still started sagging around 10 years old. I had it replaced professionally at an upholster shop, cost me AU$220 ($B!r(B91) altogether for parts and labour, so it's not that expensive. _________________ Will '90 Volvo 744 GLT B230F converted to B230FB (531 Head & VX3 Cam)
