850 Programmable Intermittent Wiper

Just got around to replacing the wiper relay with a VW/Audi part that converts it to a programmable intermittent with no modification aside from replacement of the wiper relay. I learned about this long ago from previous posts. It works great -- now my '95 854T has a programmable wiper as good as my wife's '90 Civic DX. ;-)

Here's a link to more detail from previous posters.

Sounds interesting - how do you vary the delay?

Set the wiper control to itermittent, let it sweep once and turn it off. Wait until there's enough rain on the windshield that you'd like it to activate again -- let's say you wait 20 seconds. Now set the wiper control to intermittent again. It will now remember that you waited 20 seconds, and will cycle every 20 seconds. If the rain increases or decreases and you want to increase/decrease the cycle time, turn it off. Wait until you want it activated again, and turn it on manually. If will now remember the new interval.

It resets itself to 6 seconds whenever you turn the ignition off.

I bought one of these from IPD

years ago and it is great. Volvo should have made this a feature of the car from day 1!

It also resets to 6 seconds if you leave the wipers off for longer than about 90 seconds.

I got mine for about $25.

Thanks Rick. Sounds like I should get one of these for my V70. Given that Volvo is so strong on safety it is something that should always have been in the car.

Actually, it's a standard Bosch item, used on VW models too. (Checking previous messages) It's a bosch 191 955 531 (Google turns up some forum talk that says the new P/N is 1HM 955 531B. )
