850 Radio Code

Gents,

Here's another small issue: the battery was dead in my '96 850 GLT and I had to put the code back in, after jumping the battery. However, I forgot the code and put in the wrong code three times and it seems to be locked in off position.

I think I have the code somewhere, but:

1) What happens if I can't find the code? 2) What happens if I find the code; will the radio respond to the correct code, or will it remain locked?

Thanks...

You have to keep the key on with the radio on for about 4 hours until the radio resets & says code on display then if you have correct code you can enter if you can not find the correct code then you have to contact your local Volvo dealer who will be able to assist you in getting the radio code Glenn

Car radios are usually made to self-destruct if the wrong code is entered 3 times. Otherwise, a thief could get the radio to start by entering different sets of 3 numbers, and the maximum number of attempts to make it work would be

1000, with an average of 500 tries.

My 98 V70 has 4 digits, so that means 10,000 combinations or an average of 5,000 tries!

Good luck! If they were that hard-working they wouldn't be stealing for a living!

Of course if you can only use the numbers from 1-6, you don't have

10,000 combinations, only 1,296. And there's probably a few they don't use, like 1234 or 1111.
