855 TDI odometers stopped working, speedometer and cruisecontrol ok.

1997 model 855 TDI automatic gearbox with about 310.000 km kilometrage

About a week ago the left front wheel bearing was changed. After driving this week about 700 km both odometers have stopped to move. There were

15 km on the trip odometer, which I had reset when filling the tank on Friday afternoon. Thereafter I had another about 15 km until home, then the car war parked outdoors overnight. I drove about 80 km Saturday morning to work withouth realizing it, but this morning when leaving home I realized that both odometers stand still. The speedometer and cruise control work fine.

I tried to read how the odometers are driven. If I understood correctly, there is an electric signal coming from the gear box, which feeds into the speedometer, from there somehow to the odometers and several other functions. How are the mechanical odometers driven - I assume it must be a small electric motor, which is controlled by the gearbox signal?

My suspicions:

  1. Marten induced damage to some cable when car parked over night.
  2. Some cable not thoroughly attached when exchanging the wheel bearing.
  3. Electric motor broken in the instrument panel, mechanical damage to sprocket or electrical damage?

Experiences or suggestions where to start?

Mine did the same on my 740 turbo 1990 so I pulled out the unit and really messed it up putting back wires where I thought they went . After resoldering the circuit where I ruined it I took it to the specialist near by but he said it fine working well no charge . It wasn't so I soldered every soldered joint I could find and now it is working ok . I had previously set my wife's 1988 Volvo turbo a little fast on the speedo and it worked fine I did this when the little gears jammed stopping the odometer and the milometer cleaning out the gears seemed to fix the problem that time . My wife was getting too many fines for being just over the limit 3 Klm will get you fined or 1.8 miles an hour here .REVENUE raising we call it .Some cars have a plus or minus of 10% meaning the Government wins big time ,but the latest cars are slightly under speed shown on the speedometer with Great Wall cars being every where but accurate . She found out my trick when passing a mobile speed detector board but she slowed down anyway . So check your solder joints and make sure the gears are not jammed . IPD sell new speedo gears if you can fit it ,which is a big if ?

After some more research I think that will most probably be a typical problem of the Volvo 850 odometers, means broken small plastic gear wheels. Pressing the reset button while the car is moving probably caused it... Several people just don´t care and get the mileage info from the board computer if they need it. Franz47

Yupp, that's what happened to me; pressed the reset button while the car was rolling - voila, broken odometer. Inexcusably bad design, if you want my opinion. It ended up costing me several hundred dollars to get it fixed, the volvo service agent had to take the whole dash out and ship it to a specialist shop across town.

I have ordered the 2 plastic gears (2x16 ?) which can be changed in the odometer unit at

I think it will be 1 + 5 screws to remove to get the left half of the dashbord lifted. I let myselft convince that this can be done at home and will do it myself when the little wheels arrive by mail. During the same operation I will change the bulbs. There are very good how-tos with pictures on the web, e.g.

I think I have pressed the reset button before also while driving, since I had not heard anything about that problem before. But now I am warned. There are metal wheels also available but I could not get hold of a source. So I hope that I will not have to change the wheels again at km

620.000 (now broke at 310.000 km) when I refrain from pressing reset during movement.

My 740 1990 Turbo Speedo is now working fine since I soldered every Joint I could find just rolled over 209 thousand Klm and no issues at all No rust no leaks no rattles That's around 130 thousand miles to you who drive on the wrong side of the road .Got Michelin pilot sport 3 tyres on lovely and quiet very secure in the wet around the hills .
